DeGol Arena in the Maurice Stokes Athletics Center has been the home of Red Flash Athletics for parts of five decades. The facility, built in 1971 and named in honor of the late Maurice Stokes, houses all Saint Francis athletic administration and staff.
Last renovated in 1994, the Stokes Center includes a natatorium, a fitness center, an indoor running track, as well as an auxiliary gymnasium. The centerpiece of the complex is the 3,500-seat DeGol Arena that serves as home to the Red Flash men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs. The athletic department's administrative and coaches' offices are also located in the building.
Stokes, who played at the University from 1951-55, led Saint Francis to back-to-back National Invitational Tournament appearances in 1954 and 1955. Stokes was drafted into the NBA by the Rochester Royals prior to the 1955-56 season. He was named the league's Rookie of the Year and was a three-time All-Star before his career was tragically cut short by a bout with encephalopathy. He battled the condition for twelve years before his death in 1970.
He was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004.
