HIGHLIGHTS VS. MONMOUTH
LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 12, 2012) – The Saint Francis University football team saw two of its student-athletes honored by the Northeast Conference, Monday, as
Anthony Abeid (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Christian) and
Dane Domonkos (Windber, Pa./Bishop McCort) earned weekly honors.
Domonkos post the longest kickoff return by a NEC student-athlete since the 2004 season and broke a seven-seven tie Saturday against Monmouth to earn the Northeast Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The junior wide receiver sprinted 97 yards for a touchdown and gave Saint Francis the lead for good en-route to a 45-31 victory on the road against Monmouth. After K.B. Asante scored to tie the game at seven in the first quarter, Domonkos fielded the ensuing kickoff at his 3-yard line and matched former Stony Brook players Sal Davis (Oct. 30, 2004) and Shon Brownlee (Sept. 28, 2002) for the longest kick return in the 17-plus year history of NEC football. The return changed the game and started a run of 24 unanswered SFU points. The junior also serves as the Flash's holder and successfully put down an errant snap on
Josh Thiel (Leesburg, Va./Heritage)'s 39-yard first-quarter field goal.
Abeid continued his excellent rookie season for the Flash and earned Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week accolades as he helped lead SFU to its first-ever victory at Kessler Field. On his way to being named the Ruby Tuesday Player of the Game at the conclusion of the national television broadcast, the Youngstown, Ohio native carried 18 times for 119 yards and one touchdown. His second carry of the game went for 39 yards to the Monmouth's 1-yard line, putting Saint Francis in position to score a touchdown on its opening drive of the eventual 45-31 win. The rookie running back's 27-yard scoring scamper in the second quarter gave the Red Flash a commanding 31-7 advantage and ended a run of 24 unanswered SFU points.
Saint Francis hosts its final game of the season Saturday as Sacred Heart comes to DeGol Field for senior day and a noon kickoff.
