Lorenzo Jerome Officially Makes 49ers Roster

Flash Points:
  • Former SFU safety Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) has officially made the 49ers 53-man roster.
  • He played in all four preseason games, starting the first two, and recorded nine tackles.
  • Jerome is set to become the first SFU player to appear in an NFL game since 1952.

LORETTO, Pa. – After a big 69-3 win over Lock Haven on Saturday, the Saint Francis football team found out that former All-America safety Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) has officially made the San Francisco 49ers' 53-man roster.

With teams required to cut down their rosters to 53 by 4 p.m. ET today, the 49ers officially announced who they had released at 4:10 pm.  Jerome, who signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May, is one of five safeties to make the roster.

"We're very proud of Lorenzo," said Head Coach Chris Villarrial. "He was an incredible player and leader for our program. He has worked extremely hard to get to that level. He's a great representative of our program and shows what our program is all about. We look forward to watching him in a 49ers uniform next Sunday."

After an impressive performance during mini-camp and OTAs, a few injuries gave Jerome the opportunity to practice with the first team defense.  He played in all four preseason games, starting the first two at free safety.

Jerome tied for seventh on the team with nine tackles, including eight solo, and broke up a pass.  He made three tackles in the 49ers opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, two tackles and a pass breakup against the Denver Broncos and four stops against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Florida native earned All-America honors as a junior and senior as a safety and kick returner at Saint Francis.  He also became the NEC's first ever four-time First Team selection.  His 18 career interceptions rank second all-time in SFU and NEC history and helped him to become the first player in program and conference history to earn invitations to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine.

Jerome was a major part of SFU winning it's first NEC title and earning the program's first FCS Playoffs bid in 2016.

By officially making the 49ers roster, Jerome is set to become the first Saint Francis player to appear in an NFL regular season game since Joe Restic played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1952.
