Defense, rebounding lead Red Flash women’s hoopsters to first road win of season

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Nov. 20, 2007) – Junior Shawna Scott (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill?Academy) (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill Academy) and sophomore Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio / Mount de Chantal Academy) had 15 points each to lead the Saint Francis women's basketball team to its first road win of the season, 58-47, at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday night.

The Red Flash came out in a zone defense for the first time on the season, and held the Lady Hawks to 26.8 percent shooting from the field. They also held a 43-29 rebounding edge after being outrebounded in their first three games of the season.

Saint Francis improved to 2-2 on the year, and will return to DeGol Arena when Duquesne visits for a 7 p.m. contest next Tuesday night.

“It's great to get the first win on the road to give us some confidence,” said Saint Francis head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl. “We've got a little break coming up with Thanksgiving, and hopefully that will help us heading into the Duquesne game next Tuesday.”

“Our rebounding looked a lot better tonight. We were looking to box out and chase down loose balls, and we were able to do that. The zone gave them trouble, and I thought we did a nice job of communicating in the zone.”

Hodges was 6-of-15 from the field and tied her career highs with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Scott made 9-of-10 attempts from the foul line to bring her season total to 19-of-20. She added 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

All seven players that got in the game for the Red Flash scored at least four points.

UMES jumped out to an early 5-4 lead, but Saint Francis came back with a 17-4 run to jump out by 12 points at 21-9 with 2:32 to go in the first half. The Red Flash held the Lady Hawks to 4-of-24 shooting in the first 20 minutes and took a 23-11 lead into the break.

UMES shot 34.4 percent in the second half, but couldn't overcome Saint Francis' early lead. The Red Flash led by as many as 18 points, 51-33, with 5:26 to go. The Lady Hawks put a scare into Robinson Fruchtl's club with a 9-0 run that cut the lead to 51-42 with 3:51 to go. They had a chance to cut that lead to seven or fewer points, but SFU senior Emily Bollinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) drew an offensive foul to take the momentum away.

Junior Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.V. / Fairmont) hit a jumper at the other end to make it 53-42 with 2:15 remaining, and the Lady Hawks never threatened the rest of the way.

Bollinger finished with 5 points and a game-high 8 rebounds, while Robinson contributed 6 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in 32 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Lauren Donahoe (Export, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) (Export, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) had 7 points and 2 rebounds off the bench, and freshman Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (Mount Sterling, Ohio / Miami Trace) added 6 points.
