LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 27, 2007) – Two players notched double-doubles and junior
Shawna Scott (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill?Academy) (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) scored a game-high 22 points as the Saint Francis University women's basketball team bested regional rival Duquesne, 66-54, in overtime in front of 1,163 at DeGol Arena on Tuesday night. With the win the Red Flash improve to 3-2 on the season – including a 2-0 mark in Loretto – as they enter the second half of their treacherous non-conference schedule.
“This was a really good win for us,” said Flash head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl. “We still have a long way to go but, I am very proud of our team. We rebounded well and hustled and, overall, worked hard for 45 minutes tonight.”
In a contest with seven ties and six lead changes, an overtime period seemed an appropriate way to decide the 31st installment of the now-40-year-old series. But, Saint Francis dominated the extra frame, scoring 14 while holding the Dukes to 1-of-10 from the floor, to seal just the 10th SFU win in 31 meetings all-time.
The Flash, however, now own a 2-0 mark against Duquesne in OT.
But, Saint Francis never would have gotten a chance to take the game to an extra period if not for an 8-2 run to comeback from six down with four minutes left in regulation. The Red Flash rally was made possible by seven rebounds, six on offense, and four of them courtesy of junior
Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont).
Robinson, who pulled down a game- and career-high 16 boards, also scored career-high-tying 12 points to tally her first career double-double.
“Whitney was a beast on the boards tonight,” said Robison Fruchtl, who was a post player of some note at Penn State. “I know what its like to play that position. It's hard to get 16 rebounds in a game.”
Sophomore
Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) also notched her first double-double at Saint Francis, scoring 17 and coming up with a new career mark of 10 rebounds.
However, as is becoming an obvious pattern, the victorious effort started and ended with Scott. Literally. The 5'6” guard, who for the second time this year played a complete game, made her 50th career start one to remember by scoring eight points in the contest's opening four minutes to set the pace for the SFU offense, and then sealed the deal by converting on 5-of-6 opportunities from the free throw line in the overtime period.
“All we were doing was taking advantage of opportunities tonight,” said Scott. “We had great team effort and it feels really good to win this one.”
After an off-day tomorrow Robinson Fruchtl hopes to keep the win in perspective as the Flash prepare to host Youngstown State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“While we have to have gained a lot of confidence from this game, like I told our players, 'this is not the pinnacle.' We have to keep working and keep improving week-to-week.”
“We still have a long season ahead of us.”
