LORETTO, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2007) – Saint Francis University rallied from as many as 12 down, but missed free throws and foul shots eventually caught up with the Red Flash as they fell to Youngstown State, 58-57, in women's basketball action Saturday night at DeGol Arena.
The Flash (3-3) cut a seven-point deficit with just over six minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game at 57 with 40 seconds showing on the clock. However, YSU's Heather Karner was fouled in the act of shooting with five seconds left, and converted on the second of her two opportunities.
After a Red Flash timeout, the inbounds went to
Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) who traversed the length of the floor for one last shot, which didn't fall.
But… “It shouldn't have come to that,” said SFU head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl, of her team's 33-percent shooting night.
“We were lethargic tonight. We didn't play as hard as we did against Duquesne on Tuesday. As coaches, that's very difficult to explain. Every game, every practice, you need to come to play and compete.”
Hodges led both teams with a 19-point performance, including a make from half-court to end the first half to pull the Flash to within seven. Junior
Shawna Scott (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill?Academy) (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy), in an off-night, scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high-tying 10 boards for her first double-double of the season, and SFU's third over the last two games.
Red Flash players recorded only four double-doubles all of last season.
Senior
Emily Bollinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) (Westminster, Md./Westminster) also had 10 rebounds, and
Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) rounded out the SFU double-digits scorers with 10.
Tiara Scott led the Penguins with 15 points.
Saint Francis returns to action on Wednesday when they host Akron in a 7 p.m. contest.
