Lady Bears claw Saint Francis, 62-53

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 21, 2007) – The Saint Francis University women's basketball team fell into a 14-point hole in the first six minutes of Friday's game at Morgan State University and never recovered, falling to the Lady Bears, 62-53, at Hill Field House to limp into the Christmas break on a five-game skid.

Turnovers, once again, decided the outcome for the Red Flash as they coughed up the ball 23 times to the NCAA Division I leader for team steals per game. The Lady Bears translated Red Flash miscues into 26 points on the evening.

“Focus and turnovers continue to be a problem for us,” said head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl, whose team is now 3-7 on the season. “It's going to be tough for us to win games until we starting turning that around.”

In the mean time it was Morgan State's freshman phenom Corin Adams and center Britney Griffin who made the most of the bulk of Saint Francis' turnovers. Adams threw in a game-high 21 points and Griffin was a close second, scoring 19.

“We didn't stop Morgan State in the middle of the floor,” said Robinson Fruchtl of the 42 points the Bears scored in the paint. “We also allowed Adams to get into her usual groove, which is obviously to score a lot of points.”

On offense for the Red Flash, sophomore Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) led the way with 19 points, while Shawna Scott (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill?Academy) (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) turned in a strong showing in front of her hometown crowd by scoring 13 points and dishing out a game-high six assists.

SFU freshman Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) also put in a solid day's work establishing new career-highs in points (six) and minutes (19), while grabbing her first collegiate steal.

“Allison just keeps improving,” said Robinson Fruchtl. “Her defense has been the biggest change since she's gotten here, but she had a nice night all around.”

Saint Francis managed to hold their deficit at around 10 points for most of the night until the game's final nine minutes when they closed the MSU lead to five. The Lady Bears responded with a 14-10 run that put the game out of reach.

The Red Flash saw its six-game string of out-rebounding the competition end with Morgan State holding a one board advantage by the end of the night (36-35). Saint Francis did however shoot over 40 percent from the floor for just the fourth time this season.

The Flash resume their season on Dec. 29, 2007 when they travel to Notre Dame for a 2 p.m. contest.
