LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2008) – It wasn't so much their normally-stout defense that Quinnipiac rode to a, 72-61, Northeast Conference victory over Saint Francis Monday night at DeGol Arena.
It was their offense.
And it wasn't so much the Bobcats' efficiency – they shot only 37 percent from the floor.
It was the second chances the Red Flash afforded their visitors, a la the 20 offense rebounds Qunnipiac pulled down on the evening.
“[For all of the good things] we did tonight, the glaring thing was rebounding,” said Saint Francis coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl.
“Quinnipiac took 73 shots tonight and a lot of them were from offensive rebounding. Even if they didn't just shoot it and put it in, they'd kick it back out and get another possession.”
Quinnipiac out-rebounded the Flash 48-34, overall, as well as 20-6 on the offensive glass.
The Red Flash (4-10; 1-2 NEC) seemed in control for most of the first half, as they entered the intermission holding just their second halftime lead of the season. SFU's solid play spilled over into the first five minutes of the second half, before the Bobcats took the lead for good.
Saint Francis did, however show progress in several areas. The Flash had their best shooting night, at 44.8 percent, since their Dec. 21 loss at Morgan State (.458) and committed only 11 turnovers – SFU's best effort on the season since committing nine in back-to-back games against Duquesne and Youngstown State.
“We shot better, our turnovers were down, we just didn't have the attacking mentality we needed to have,” commented Robinson Fruchtl.
Sophomore
Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) led both teams with 23 points. It was the second 20-plus-point performance of her career and her second in three days.
Hodges scored a career-high 29 points in Saturday's, 66-60, win over Monmouth.
Junior
Shawna Scott (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill?Academy) (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) dished out a game-high seven assists and junior
Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) led SFU with six rebounds.
Quinnipiac's Monique Lee led the Bobcats with 19 points.
Saint Francis resumes its season on Saturday when they travel to Wagner for a 5 p.m. tilt.
