MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2008) – The Saint Francis women's soccer team's school—record unbeaten streak may have ended weeks ago, but they Flash have started another one by staying unbeaten in the Northeast Conference after shutting out the Robert Morris Colonials 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Moon Township.
The Red Flash are now 3-0 in the NEC defeating Central Connecticut State 2-0 and tying Quinnipiac 0-0 in double overtime last weekend at the Stokes Soccer Complex in Loretto.
Senior captain Alanna Vespa (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary’s Catholic) (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary's Catholic) netted her 5th goal of the season, which was also the eventual game-winner less than one minute into the second half. The Flash took the ball up the right sidelines where forward Brittni Grenninger (Chicora, Pa/Karns City ) (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) picked it up and crossed it to Vespa. Vespa quickly settled it and shot it to the near post, where it slid past Colonials keeper Caitlin Dilal. The goal moves her into first place in scoring for the Red Flash with 13 points. Prior to Sunday, she was tied with forward Rachael Seibert (Murrysville, Pa/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Township), who currently has 5 goals and 11 points.
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) stopped 5 shots for her 4th shut out of the season and the 11th of her career. Dilal had 2 saves for Robert Morris.
The Colonials out shot the Red Flash 11-10 in the game. Vespa led the team with 4 shots, 2 coming on goal, with Seibert behind her with two shots. Grenninger, midfielder Haleigh Dunyon (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson), forward Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and forward Chelsea Traurig (McMurry, Pa./Peters Township) also had shots for the Flash.
SFU will travel to New Jersey to take on the Monmouth Hawks at 3 P.M. on October 17 in West Long Branch.
