Lewis Breaks School, NEC Records as Red Flash Fall to Bulldogs 23-0 in Season Finale

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2008) – Sophomore linebacker Scott Lewis (South Fork, PA/Bishop McCourt) (South Fork, Pa./Bishop McCort) set new single-season program and Northeast Conference records, but the Saint Francis football team couldn't put points on the board and fell to the Bryant University Bulldogs 23-0 on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Field in their final game of the season. The Red Flash finish the season 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the NEC.

Seniors Bronson Abrigo (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Saint Louis), Dan Hindman (Elizabeth, Pa. /Elizabeth Forward) (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), Ray Tali (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Fagaitua), Rickey Williamson (Waldorf, Md/Crosslands) (Waldorf, Md./Crossland), Jesse Stasko (Elizabeth, Pa/Elizabeth Forward) (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), Ian Stasko (Elizabeth, Pa. /Elizabeth Forward) (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), Alexander Szoke-Benton (Kunkletown, Pa. /Pius X ) Kunkletown, Pa./Pius X), Matt Davis (Arnold, Md/Saint Mary's) (Arnold, Md./Saint Mary's), Bobby Fuller (Mount Savage, Md/Beall) (Mount Savage, Md./Beall) and Joe Drago (Perrineville, N.J./Notre Dame), who were all playing for the Red Flash for the final time, were honored prior to the game as part of the team's annual Senior Day.

Lewis had 12 tackles to finish the season with 142 total tackles, breaking Daunte Neal's single-season total of 138 that was set in 2000. The total also surpassed the NEC record of 140 tackles in a season.

Fuller also set new program records for punting. His 10 punts against Bryant for 400 yards gave him season totals of 71 punts for 2,906 yards. The yardage surpasses the single-season school record of 2,813 yards set by Matt Gergely in 2000. Fuller's career average of 36.92 yards per punt also breaks Matt Shontofski's (1993-96) record of 36.2 yards per punt.

Battling snow squalls and frigid temperatures, neither team was able to pick up a first down on their initial possession. Bryant was able to adjust and Jerell Smith rushed for 30 yards on 4 carries before quarterback Jay Graber sent an 8-yard pass to Ross Giffune who took it into the end zone for the score. Chris Bird's point after put the Bulldog's up 7-0 with 8:11 left to play in the first quarter.

The Red Flash's next drive ended quickly when quarterback George Little (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne) (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne) was intercepted by Pat Gauthier at the Saint Francis 37-yard line. However, the Bulldogs couldn't turn the pick into points and were forced to punt.

The Bulldogs also lost the ball in the first quarter, when sophomore linebacker Matthew Parker (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) (Downington, Pa./Blackhawk) forced Smith to fumble the ball at the SFU 40-yard line. James Betz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) recovered the fumble to give the Flash the ball with 3:56 left in the first quarter. They, too, would be forced to punt without picking up the first down.

The second quarter did not start out well for the Red Flash, as Little was sacked for a loss of 13 yards, leaving them unable to pick up the first down. Bryant fared better, with Smith picking up a first down as he rushed for 30 yards on 5 plays, but could not reach the end zone.

Jude Yearwood (Elkridge, Md./Howard) (Elkridge, Md./Howard) got the running game started for the Flash, picking up SFU's second first down of the game on a 20-yard carry. However, Little was sacked again on for a loss of 12 yards and Fuller punted again to end the drive.

Smith was again the highlight of the Bulldogs' next possession, getting the first down on a 19-yard run and picking up 43 yards. Graber couldn't complete a pass to Mike Canorfa, and Bryant was forced to settle for a 32-yard field goal, putting them up 10-0 with 40 seconds left in the half.

The third quarter started off with fumbles by both teams. Little fumbled the ball at his own 20-yard line and was able to recover for a loss of 8 yards. The Red Flash punted back to the Bulldogs, and Graber was sacked for a loss of 10 yards and fumbled. Ryan Shepard (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) recovered the fumble, giving the ball back to the Flash at their own 49-yard line. Again, they were unable to pick up the first down and the Bulldogs got the ball back.

SFU caught a lucky break a few possessions later, when a holding penalty by the Bulldogs during a Red Flash punt gave the Flash an automatic first down. Their luck quickly ran out when Little was intercepted by Bryce Martin at the Bryant 15-yard line.

The Bulldogs marched the ball down the field 85 yards, picking up 3 first downs before Vinton South's 33 yard reception in the end zone gave them another 6 points. Bird's point after gave Bryant a 17-0 lead with 1:19 left in the third quarter.

Bryant scored again on their first possession of the fourth quarter. Smith, who finished the day with 150 yards on 30 carries, picked up 44 yards on the drive. Lewis sacked Graber for a loss of 3 yards, but he recovered quickly and sent a 12-yard pass to Tyler DiGiovani for a touchdown. The score remained at 23-0 when Bird's point after failed.
