BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2008) – For the second game in a row, Saint Francis saved their best for the second half, with the damage of a lackluster opening period already done, as they fell to St. Francis College, 53-39, on Monday afternoon at Aquilone Court.
The Red Flash (6-19; 3-11 Northeast) were outscored, 26-11, in the first period, but rebounded to outscore Terriers, 28-27, in the final frame.
The loss puts Saint Francis University at tough – though not impossible – odds to make the Northeast Conference post-season for the first time in three years. The Flash entered the day in 10th place, but just a game behind Monmouth and Wagner, who are tied for the eighth and final playoff berth.
The Red Flash plays both Wagner and Monmouth over the regular season's final four games.
Saint Francis was done-in by cold shooting and turnovers in the first half, converting on just 20 percent of their shots from the field and committing 14 turnovers.
In the second period, the Flash took better care of the ball, coughing it up only seven times, and also shot nearly 39 percent from the floor to raise their field goal percentage to 30.4 percent for the contest.
Saint Francis still managed to out-rebound the Terriers, 38-31. In what might be considered a statistical anomaly, the Flash are now 3-8 in games in which they hold the advantage on the boards.
Sophomore
Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) paced the Flash with 17 points and five assists. Senior
Emily Bollinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) (Westminster, Md./Westminster) pulled down a game-high nine boards.
SFC's Tiffany Hill, who scored 19 points in the season's first meeting, once again led both teams, this time with 23 points.
The Red Flash return to action on Saturday as they tip-off their final home stand of the season vs. Mount St. Mary's.
