LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2008) – Breaking from the script from their past two games, Saint Francis put together a solid first half but faded late, as Mount St. Mary's cruised past the Red Flash, 84-72, in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena.
The loss made for a bittersweet day as it was also Senior Day for Saint Francis' lone four-year player, Emily Bollinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) (Westminster, Md./Westminster).
The 6'2” post made the most of her second-to-last game on her home court, scoring a career-high 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
“She's just been playing inspired,” coach Susan Robinson Fructhl. “She plays hard and she's played hard all year. As senior, coming in with a new coach she could have said 'Eh, I'm not gonna do anything. I'm not going to apply myself…' She's been the total opposite of that. She's a great captain and a leader for our team.”
Despite the lopsided final score, the Flash battled late into the game before the Mountaineers took over. There were three ties and five lead changes in the second period alone, but Mount St. Mary's attacked quickly and effectively after every Saint Francis charge.
“We made some nice runs, but you've got to score, then you've got to get a stop,” said Robinson Fruchtl. “A lot times we let them score way too easily.”
Also scoring easily was sophomore Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) who claimed her 24th double-digit scoring game of the season with 21 points, dished out a career-high 10 assists, and finished just three boards shy of a triple-double.
Freshman Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) also put together a solid outing, scoring a career-high 12 points and grabbing seven boards.
The Flash also impressed on the glass as a team, out-rebounding the Mountaineers, 37-25, including 17 offensive boards.
“We've been getting second-chance opportunities, but we've got to convert,” said Robinson Fruchtl. “We missed a lot of layups today.”
Saint Francis (6-20; 3-12 Northeast) still has some hope of making the conference tournament, although the odds get longer with every loss.
Robinson Fructhl explained: “You have to approach these games like it's the tournament. When you lose you go home, you win and you advance. You fight to live another day. We could still win the next three games, but you can't think three games, you can only think one game [at a time].”
The Red Flash return to action on Monday as they close down their home season vs. Wagner.
