LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2008) – Saint Francis' playoff hopes took a big hit Monday night at DeGol Arena, as the Red Flash fell to the Wagner Seahawks, 64-60, in women's basketball action.
The loss, which snapped a 12-game win streak over Wagner, puts Saint Francis (6-21; 3-13 Northeast) two games back in the hunt for the eighth and final league playoff berth with two games remaining on the schedule.
The Red Flash put together a dominating first half, building an 11-points halftime lead, and holding as much as a 13-point advantage, while holding Wagner to just 18 points.
After the intermission, Saint Francis weathered some early Seahawk runs, but the visitors began to slowly chip away at the once-formidable Flash advantage. Wagner took its first lead of the second half with 11:21 to go in regulation, but traded leads with SFU for the next several minutes.
Wagner took the lead for good with 16 seconds to go in regulation on a pair of Ashley Olson freethrows. After a missed jumper by sophomore
Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy), the Seahawks added two Ali Ridge foul shots to seal the win.
“You give up 46 points in the second half after you just gave up 18. That's determination. That's just wanting it more, and going out and getting your job done on defense,” said SFU coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl.
“That's lack of communication and getting back on defense, and getting loose balls when they counted and we did not do that. To me, that's pride, determination, and heart.”
Saint Francis now hits the road for its final two games of the regular season, visiting Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday and Monmouth on Monday.
The Flash's goal entering the season's final days: “We've got to win both,” Robinson Fruchtl said, “that's our only chance. We're down to out last two, we got to get those, and we've got to start with the first one. You can't look at the second one.”
“You've got to finish the season strong because it sets a tone for the off-season, for the summer, for September when we come back. I think when times are tough it reveals character, so we'll see what character [our team has].”
Wagner (7-20; 5-11 Northeast) is currently tied for eighth place with Monmouth, who upset current no. 1 seed Quinnipiac earlier in the evening.
The Red Flash, who wrapped-up their home season with a 4-10 record, were led offensively by freshman
Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) who scored a game- and career-high 16 points. Daly also tied with junior
Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) for a game-high seven boards.
Hodges nabbed her second double-double in as many games, scoring 12 points to go along with a career-high-tying 10 assists.
SFU out-rebounded Wagner, 32-28. The Flash have now out-boarded their opponents in each of the last four games and have done so 13 times, overall, this season.
