League-leading Bobcats hold off Red Flash

HAMDEN, Conn. (Feb. 4, 2008) – Saint Francis shot a season-best 48.9 percent from the field, but Quinnipiac held the Red Flash at bay, preserving a ten-point lead for most of the game, and dispatching SFU, 65-58, Monday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The loss drops Saint Francis to 6-15 (3-7 Northeast) on the year, while the league-leading Bobcats improved to 17-3 (9-1 Northeast).

“It's the little things,” said Flash coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl. “It's the turnovers; we had 19 – and the rebounding in the second half gave us some problems.”

Saint Francis, despite playing a spirited game, seriously challenged Quinnipiac only once.

Down 15-6 with 10:44 left in the first half, the Flash went on an 11-4 run to pull within two points just four minutes later. The Bobcats responded to build a 10-point lead by the intermission.

“Our three quarter-court press gave them fits for a little bit, and then we picked up full-court man [defense],” said Robinson Fruchtl. “We gave them some problems but, again, our depth there is not good enough to do that the whole game like I would like to.”

Saint Francis had four players score in double digits, and were paced by sophomore Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal Academy) and junior Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) who each had 16.

Freshman Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) and senior Emily Bollinger (Westminster, Md./Westminster) (Westminster, Md./Westminster) each tossed in 10 points, to round out SFU's double-digit scorers.

By scoring 10, Bollinger – who also led the Flash with nine boards – extended her double-figures scoring streak to five consecutive games.

“Em is just another player who continues, especially offensively, getting smarter and reading the defense and knowing the shots that she's going to get,” said Robinson Fruchtl of her squad's lone senior. “She really listens when we make adjustments in timeouts or halftimes. She does a great job for our team and making those adjustments.”

Each team wound up with 32 rebounds, with the Bobcats holding the advantage on the offensive glass with 14 boards to Saint Francis' eight.

Saint Francis returns to action on Saturday, February 9, when they host Fairleigh Dickinson. Saturday is also THINK PINK Day. All fans wearing pink will be admitted into the game for just $2. Proceeds will go toward raising breast cancer awareness.
