Vespa’s Second Goal of Season Not Enough as Red Flash Soccer Falls to Longwood 2-1

FARMVILLE, Va. (Sept. 26, 2008) – Senior captain Alanna Vespa (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary’s Catholic) (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary's Catholic) was the lone Red Flash player to score as the Saint Francis women's soccer team fell to Longwood 2-1 in on Friday evening in Farmville.

The team travels to Annapolis on Sunday to take on the Naval Academy in a 1 PM match up. They will return home to host Central Connecticut State at 3 PM on October 3 at the Stokes Soccer Complex in Loretto.

Neither team could find the net until 28 minutes in the first half until Lancer player Alex Myers picked up a loose ball in the box and beat Red Flash goal keeper Lauren Fearer (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area) (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area) to put the Lancers up 1-0. Myers then scored again on a one-timer 15 minutes in to the second half of off a pass from teammate Maddie Stevens to put Longwood up 2-0.

Vespa then received a pass from sophomore forward Kate Bosy (Scotia, N.Y/Scotia Glenville) (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia Glenville) and then beat Longwood goalie Marcia Biddle to put the Red Flash on the board. Saint Francis out shot the Lancers 12-4 in the game, and Fearer had 2 saves.

Vespa and freshman midfielder Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) led the charge for the Saint Francis with 4 shots each.

"It was kind of the same as Youngstown State. We just couldn't put the ball in the net – it's as simple as that," said head coach Brenda van Stralen. "There was just not enough effort. But we are still trying to build this team up. We're getting ready to start conference play and see how far we can get."
