Red Flash Top Seahawks for Third NEC Win

LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 19, 2009) – Junior guard Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton,  had 17 points and Saint Francis women's basketball team had 23 points off turnovers as they defeated the Wagner College Seahawks on Monday evening at DeGol Arena.

The Flash now move to 4-12 overall and 3-4 in the conference.  They will travel to Brooklyn for a televised match up with Northeast Conference rivals St. Francis (NY) on January 24 at 2 p.m.

The Seahawks may have scored first on a jumper from Lindsay Corcoran, but the 2-0 lead was the only advantage Wagner had throughout the night.  Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) sunk a jumper of her own before Janie Killian (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) put the Flash up 4-2 on a lay up.  The team never looked back.

Scoring moved slowly for both teams, and at point a lay up by Leach was the only basket made in a four-minute span.  The Seahawks were able to stay in the game, coming back from a nine-point deficit to trail by just a point with 5:27 left to go in the first half.  However, the Red Flash stayed strong and soon built their lead back up to 9.  They were able to hang on, and headed into the locker room up 29-23.

It was the SFU bench that stormed back in the second half.  After scoring 8 points in the first half, they doubled their output and came away with 16 in the second half.  Kelsey Caruthers (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) led the charge of the reserves, going 3-of-4 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line.  Quinessa Johnson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) also factored in, ending the night with 9 points.

With the help of the reserves, Saint Francis built on their point total, and took a commanding 20-point lead with 6 minutes remaining in the game.  Part of that lead came from the 13 points they took away from their 23 trips to the free-throw line.

A three-point shot by Casey Stokes brought Wagner to within 12 with 2:35 left to play in the game, but the Seahawks would pick up only one more point before Corcoran scored on a last-second jumper.  Her effort was in vain, as they Flash came away from the game with a 66-51 win.

The Flash held the Seahawk's best player, Andrea Reed to just 9 points in the game, as Wagner was led in scoring by Casey Stokes with 10 points.  Ashley Olsen also chipped in wit 9.

Hodges led the scoring 17 points and 7 boards.  Leach was also in double-digits for SFU with 12 points.  Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) continued to be a factor, chipping in with 7 rebounds, 4 points, 4 assists and 4 steals.

For the sixth time in 9 games, SFU out-rebounded their opponent.  They ended the game with 50 boards to the Seahawks' 34.  They finished the night shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 55.6 percent at the line.  The Flash held Wagner to a field goal percentage of just 32.7 percent.
