NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Oct. 30, 2009) – Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow)'s (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) first career goal couldn't give the Saint Francis women's soccer team the win as the Red Flash fell to the Northeast Conference leader Central Connecticut State 5-1 on Friday in New Britain.
CCSU's Beth Lloyd gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead eight and a half minutes into the first half when she took advantage of a misstep by SFU goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mount Lebanon) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon).
Butcher, a freshman goalkeeper who has seen action at forward this season, tied the game up three minutes later. Senior forward Rachael Seibert (Murrysville, Pa/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) sent a pass over to the left side of the box, where Butcher took the ball and sent it into the right corner of the net. The ball bounced off of the post before slipping past CCSU goalkeeper Caity Casey to give Butcher her first career tally.
Brittany Jackson and Clio Treager each netted a goal to put CCSU up 3-1 going into half time. Eight minutes into the second half, Leah Blaney beat Boyer one-on-one to put the score at 4-1.
Lloyd netted her second of the game with 18 minutes remaining as the Blue Devils remained in control of the Northeast Conference standings.
Central Connecticut outshot Saint Francis 26-4. Seibert had two shots, with fellow senior Alyssa Kersey (Clay, N.Y/Cicero-North Syracuse) (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) adding another.
Boyer had 11 saves in the contest.
The Red Flash will continue to battle for a playoff spot when they take on Quinnipiac in Connecticut on Sunday.
