LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2009) – Sophomore guard Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) had her second double-double of the season and Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) scored her 900th career point to lead the Saint Francis women's basketball team over the Fairleigh-Dickinson Knights by a score of 75-52 at DeGol Arena in Loretto on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the team honored seniors Taryn Adamski (Valencia, Pa./Mars) (Valencia, Pa./Mars), Whitney Robinson (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont) and Shawna Scott (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill?Academy) (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) who will play their final game at DeGol Arena on Monday night against rival Robert Morris. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
The Red Flash started off cold, letting the Knights jump out to a 7-0 lead before Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) sunk a three-pointer to put Saint Francis in the game 2:31 into the first half. Leach hit another less than a minute later to bring SFU within three.
Three consecutive lay ups by the Knights put them back in front by nine with 15:11 remaining in the first. Saint Francis went on a 12-2 run and Robinson put them ahead by one with by nailing a jumper with 7:20 left in the first. The FDU was able to gain a six point advantage before the Red Flash tied the game at 24-24 on a jumper by Leach. Fouled on the play, her ensuing free-throw gave SFU the lead before Mariyah Laury put up a lay up to again give the Knights the lead. Fairleigh Dickinson took a 32-38 lead with them into the locker room.
Saint Francis came out ready to play the last 20 minutes, quickly tying the score on a lay up by Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and again as Leach sunk two. Leach then put up a lay up that started a 17-4 run that put them ahead by 12 with 10 minutes left to play in the game. They kept the points coming, shooting 61.3 percent from the field to put themselves ahead by 24 with a jumper and free-throw by Hodges. Two points from Robinson settles the score at 75-52. A strong defensive effort limited the Knights to 6-of-21 in the second half, and the Red Flash turned the ball over just four times after halftime.
Daly's 20 points and 13 rebounds led the way, with Lilley close behind after scoring 14 points in the second half to end the afternoon with 17. Leach was also in the double-digits with 15. Hodges scored her 900th point on a jumper and ended the night with eight points and three rebounds. The Red Flash put up a great rebounding effort, grabbing 37 boards to FDU's 27.
Scott dished out two assists, and will end her career in at least 8th place all time, with a total of 305 career assists. SFU had a total of 12 assists on the evening to FDU's 6. They also outscored the Knights in the paint 30-20, and added another 20 points off turnovers.
Alyssa Mayrose led the scoring with 18 points, followed by Mariyah Laury with 13. Mayrose also led the rebounding with five boards. The Knights shot 38 percent from the field.
