FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 7, 2009) – Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) had another double-double and freshman Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (Severna Park, Md,/Severna Park) led the team in scoring in her postseason debut as the Saint Francis women's basketball team defeated two-time defending champion Robert Morris in their first playoff game in three years.
The Red Flash scored the first points of the game on a jumper by Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) but the Colonials went on 6-2 run to get out in front early. Lilley went 3-of-4 at the free-throw line to keep SFU in the game as Robert Morris took an eight point lead on a lay up by Kendra Williams.
A three-pointer and a jumper from Daly tied the game at 18-18 before Williams went to the free-throw line and came away with two to take back the advantage.
Finding themselves down by six with 3:01 left in the first half, the Flash went on a 9-0 scoring run that included a three-pointer and a lay-up from Lilley to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room with them.
The second half started off as a defensive battle in which neither team scored for nearly three-minutes until Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) went to the free throw line and came away with a point. Daly then put up her third three-pointer of the night to put the score at 38-35.
Daly then put up yet another three to give SFU a six point advantage before Monet Johnson put up a lay up for the Colonials and cut the lead to four. Lilley, who went 8-for-10 at the charity stripe, sunk two free-throws and put up a lay up soon after to put the Flash up 45-37 with 14:36 left to play.
Hodges also sunk two at the line, and Janie Killian (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) put up a lay up and sunk the ensuing free-throw shot before RMU went on a 9-0 run to bring themselves within two before Quinessa Johnson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) scored two off of a steal by Daly, who had three on the night.
Within a matter of minutes, Lilley again went to the line and came away perfect and the Flash went on a 10-3 run that put them ahead by 11 with 5:28 left to play. The Colonials went 4-for-4 at the line, but their efforts were offset as Leach and Hodges both sunk three-pointers to keep the Red Flash in front 72-60.
Lilley led the scoring with 19 points and seven boards, followed by Daly with her second double-double in three games at 18 points and 11 rebounds. Hodges put up 13 and points and dished out six helpers, and Leach chipped in with 10 points as the Flash had four players in double-digits for the tenth time this season.
Williams led the Colonials with 15 points, followed Sade Logan and Latavia Vails each with 12. Robert Morris also had six steals and 22 turnovers.
Saint Francis shot 37.5 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from beyond the arc and stole the ball a total of 11 times while turning it over 20 themselves. The Flash out-rebounded the Colonials 45-35.
"One of our goals by halftime is to be up on the boards," said Robinson Fruchtl. "We always have a goal to out-rebound team by double-figures, and if you can out-rebound Robert Morris you're doing pretty well. They're very athletic and can jump out of the gym. I thought we took pretty good care of the ball in the second half. We had a lot of turnovers early in the game, and I think that was nerves. Once we settled down, I thought we got some really good looks on offense. We played tough defense over the course of 40 minutes."
SFU will take on the number two seed Central Connecticut State at the William H. Pitt Center on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship game.
