Red Flash Set NEC Mark in Impressive Road Victory Over Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Feb. 11, 2010) – The Saint Francis men's basketball team used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to pull away and never look back in an impressive 60-34 Northeast Conference victory over Bryant in a regionally televised game on Thursday night at the Chace Athletic Center.

SFU held the Bulldogs to 28.0 percent from the field, and 1-of-22 from outside the 3-point line. The 34 points allowed tied a Northeast Conference mark for fewest in a game.

Junior Sorena Orandi (Vastra Frolunda, Sweden/Solebury Prep) (Vastra Frolunda, Sweden / Solebury Prep) led all scorers with 13 points, while senior Devin Sweetney (Washington, DC /Riverdale Baptist) (Washington, D.C. / Riverdale Baptist) had 11, and senior Kurt Hoffman (Johnstown, PA /Greater Johnstown ) (Johnstown, Pa. / Greater Johnstown) and freshman Will Felder (Cleveland, OH/Lutheran East Hs) (Cleveland, Ohio / Lutheran East) contributed 10 points each.

The Red Flash snapped a 23-game road losing streak with the victory, and earned its first Northeast Conference road win since Feb. 14, 2008, at St. Francis-NY, a span of 17 NEC road games. SFU improved to 8-16 overall, and 6-7 in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they visit Central Connecticut State for another critical league contest. After winning just three league games a year ago, SFU doubled its NEC win total from 2008-09.

Saint Francis held the Bulldogs without a point for 10 minutes, 6 seconds during a 10-0 run in the first half, turning a 6-6 ballgame into a 16-6 lead. Hoffman, who tied a career high with 10 points, scored four points during the run and keyed another critical stretch to start the second half.

The Red Flash used another 10-2 run to close the first half, and took their biggest lead at that point on a 3-pointer by Orandi with 4.6 seconds remaining to make it a 30-14 game at halftime. The 14 points allowed are the fewest by an opponent in any half this season.

Hoffman scored the first four points of the second half to get Saint Francis started. Bryant would score the next four points to make it 34-18 with 15:29 to go, but that's as close as the Bulldogs would get the rest of the way.

Claybrin McMath pulled Bryant within 17, 43-26, with 8:24 to go, but the Red Flash scored the next 10 points and held the Bulldogs without a score until Daniel Calandrillo made a layup with 3:19 to go to make it 53-28.

Felder finished two rebounds shy of his first career double-double, and Hoffman added five rebounds. Sweetney, who moved into ninth on the school's all-time scoring list, had a game-high 4 steals. Senior Chris McFarland (Montgomery Village, MD /Riverdale Baptist) (Montgomery Village, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) played a career-high 26 minutes and had 3 points and a season-high 4 assists against just 1 turnover. Freshman Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) (Chesterfield, Va. / Fork Union Military Academy) added 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists off the bench.

Game Notes: Devin Sweetney (Washington, DC /Riverdale Baptist) moved past legendary Red Flash player Norm Van Lier into ninth on the school's all-time scoring list. Van Lier had 1,410 points during his career, and Sweetney now has 1,415; SFU allowed just 34 points, fewest since a 43-34 victory over Steubenville on Jan. 27, 1974, a span of 36 years; The Red Flash doubled their NEC win total (3) from the 2008-09 season; Saint Francis matched its highest win total (8 in 2006-07) of the last five seasons.
