LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 4, 2010) – Despite leading by nine points near the end of the first half, the Saint Francis women's basketball team couldn't overcome a late scoring drought as they fell to in-state rival Robert Morris in overtime on Thursday evening in DeGol Arena.
The Red Flash, who fall to 9-12 overall and 6-5 in the Northeast Conference will take on the Colonials again on Saturday as part of NEC Rivals Week. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. at the Sewell Center in Moon Township.
Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) had her second double double in eight days, with a career-high 17 rebounds and 16 points. Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) led the Flash in scoring with 23 points, while Britney Hodges (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) (Dayton, Ohio/Mount de Chantal) put up 10 points and eight assists. Quinessa Johnson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Janie Killian (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) all had seven each.
Vega Gimeno-Martinez sunk a three off of a pass from Monica Jones to start the game, followed by a layup from Kristine Silaraja to put RMU up 5-0. Leach followed up with three points of her own off of a pass from Johnson, while Gimeno-Martinez sunk two more three-pointers at the other end, with Daly adding in a layup for the Red Flash as the Colonials took an 11-5 lead with 16:33 left.
Leach made a short jumper, which was immediately followed by a steal and fast-break layup from Hodges to put SFU within two. Angela Pace put up two for the Colonials before Daly nailed her first three-pointer of the night to bring SFU within one. Two points from Johnson gave the Red Flash their first lead of the night with 14:32 remaining in the first half. The ensuing free throw put the home team up by two.
Daly made a jumper, countered by a layup from Gimeno-Martinez. A jumper from Anna Gailite tied the game at 17-all with 12:07 remaining. Neither team scored for more than two minutes, when Daly made her specialty shot – the three-pointer – to put SFU up 20-17. Silaraja cut into the lead with a bucket before Pace brought the advantage back to the Colonials. Silaraja went 3-for-3 at the line increase Robert Morris' lead to four before a triple from Daly knocked it back done to one. Another three from Hodges put the lead back into the Red Flash's hands.
Johnson went to the charity stripe and was 2-for-2, while Leach put up back-to-back layups as the Flash built on their lead. Allison Smith (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) came up with a big block on Pace that turned into a fast-break layup by Lilley, who added in another layup soon after to give SFU a 36-27 advantage.
Silaraja cut into the lead with a three-point shot, but Leach put up two in the pain as Saint Francis took an eight-point lead. Pace cut in with two points for the Colonials, and was countered Leach's bucket. Pace added in two more, as did Leach with a jumper. Destiny Harrison and Monica Jones each made a bucket, but SFU took a 40-36 lead into halftime.
Pace sunk the first two points of the second half, and was closely followed by Leach who countered with three. Jones also sunk a three from the corner, followed by a jumper from Pace to come within two of the SFU lead.
Gimeno-Martinez brought RMU within one at the free-throw line, but couldn't tie the game up. SFU's Johnson was able to add two more to the Red Flash lead off of a pass from Leach before Pace was sent to the charity stripe, also coming away with one.
Killian was also on the receiving end of a foul and was able to score a point, while Leach put up a jumper off of a fast break after Hodges came up with a defensive rebound. Hodges then drilled a three after a defensive rebound by Daly, again putting SFU ahead by eight.
The scoring stalled for the Flash soon after, as the Colonials went on an 8-1 scoring run in while SFU did not make a field goal for a span of almost nine minutes, allowing RMU to take a four point lead. Leach put up a bucket to end the drought, but Harrison followed with a jumper for the Colonials to keep the lead.
Leach was perfect at the free-throw line, cutting RMU's lead down to just two points with less than two minutes to play. With 36 seconds left, Hodges sent the ball over to Killian to tie the game at 62-62. Silaraja missed a three-pointer, with Killian picking up the rebound. However, Daly couldn't make the last second three-point shot and sent the game into overtime.
Robert Morris won the overtime tip-off, but couldn't capitalize on their first possession. However, Pace was able to notch the first points of the extra minutes with a layup more than a minute in. She followed up with a jumper, and the Red Flash then found themselves in a six-point deficit with 2:31 remaining.
Daly put up her fourth three-point shot of the day to put SFU back in the game, trailing 68-65. Jones was then sent to the free-throw line, coming away with two and was followed at the stripe by Pace after she was fouled putting up a jumper.
Gimeno-Martinex was next at the charity stripe, but could only sink one. Killian put up a bucket in the paint, but missed the ensuing free throw as RMU still held a seven-point lead. Another shot at the line from Pace increased it to eight, before a three-pointer from Lilley cut it down to five. Silaraja went to the line to finish up the game, making one as Saint Francis took a 76-60 loss.
The Red Flash started off hot, shooting 51.6 percent in the first half before going just 8-of-31 in the second to end the night at 38.0 percent. They were also 9-of-35 from beyond the arc for 25.7 percent. SFU finished the night at 63.6 percent at the free-throw line.
Pace had 23 points and 18 rebounds for the Colonials, followed by Silaraja with 19 and Gimeno-Martinez with 17.
Saint Francis was able to out-rebound the Colonials 51-41, but found themselves on the losing end when it came to turnovers (19-15) as RMU came up with 13 steals.
Both teams put up 26 points in the paint, while the SFU reserves outscored the RMU bench 14-6. However, the Colonials came up with 12 points on the fast break as opposed to SFU's six.
