On The Horizon
Saint Francis will continue its season-long four-game home stand when St. Francis-NY visits next Thursday night at 7 p.m. The two teams met earlier this season in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., where the Terriers came away with a 57-44 victory. St. Francis-NY 8-8 (3-2 NEC) record into Saturday afternoon's contest at Mount St. Mary's.
History Lesson
The Saint Francis radio team of Bernie Jubeck and Joe Vesnesky love their history, so we dedicate this note to the voices of the Red Flash. Teaneck, which is home to Fairleigh Dickinson University, was created on February 19, 1895 by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. Teaneck's location at the crossroads of river, road, train and other geographical features has made it a site of many momentous events across the centuries. After the American defeat at the Battle of Fort Washington, George Washington and the troops of the Continental Army retreated across New Jersey from the British Army, traveling through Teaneck and crossing the Hackensack River at New Bridge Landing, which has since been turned into a state park and historic site commemorating the events of 1776 and of early colonial life.
Series vs. Fairleigh Dickinson
This will be the 75th meeting between Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis in a series that dates back to Maurice Stokes' final season in 1954-55. The Knights own a 40-34 advantage in the all-time series, but the Red Flash have won two of the last three meetings. They have also won the last two contests at DeGol Arena, and six of the last eight.
Sizing Up The Knights
Fairleigh Dickinson enters Saturday's game having lost eight straight games after an 83-65 setback on Thursday night at Robert Morris. The Knights are 1-6 on the road this season. Road Warriors
Saint Francis played 12 of its first 15 games on the road, where it has an 0-12 record. SFU played 10 of 11 away from DeGol Arena from Nov. 24 until Jan. 13. The Red Flash were 2-14 on the road last season, and are 2-38 since a win at Morgan State on Dec. 1, 2008.
Home Sweet Home
The Red Flash have a .684 winning percentage at DeGol Arena over their last 19 games (13-6 record) dating back to a 78-59 season-ending victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 28, 2009. SFU had a four game home winning streak snapped against Drexel (Dec. 18), but has won eight of its last 10 at home. Saint Francis will play host to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday in the 496th men's game to be played at DeGol Arena. The Red Flash will play host to Bryant in the facility's 500th men's basketball game on Feb. 5, 2011.
Where's The Offense?
The Red Flash have struggled to find balanced scoring thus far in 2010-11. They are 11th in the 12-team Northeast Conference in scoring (59.6 ppg), and hit the 70-point plateau for the first time this season on Thursday night. Saint Francis went six straight games without exceeding 60-or-more points on offense before Thursday night's win over Monmouth. The Red Flash had four players score in double figures for the first time this season on Thursday evening.
3-Point Struggles
Saint?Francis had 203 three-pointers (6.77 per game) during the 2009-10 season, which was good for third in program history, and ranked second in the Northeast Conference with a 36.8 three-point field goal percentage. However, SFU has struggled from long distance so far this season. The Red Flash are averaging just 4.81 field goals per game from outside the arc, and rank 10th in the league with a 29.2 three-point field goal percentage. After going 6-for-36 (.167) from long distance in three straight games, Saint Francis tied a season-high with 10 three-pointers on Thursday night.
Growing Pains
As one of the youngest Division I teams in the country, Saint Francis is suffering through some growing pains as head coach Don Friday is in the midst of a rebuilding process. With just 11 total years of Division I experience on the roster heading into 2010-11, most of SFU's minutes are being played by student-athletes with less than two years of experience. The five Red Flash sophomores have accounted for 61.5 percent (1968 of 3200) of the minutes played so far this season. Add in the six newcomers who have seen action, including junior transfer Jon Taylor (Bowie, Md./Montgomery College-Germantown), and 80.7 percent (2583 of 3200) of the minutes played are being contributed by first or second-year Division I players.
Super Sophomores
As previously mentioned, Saint Francis' five sophomores are putting in significant minutes this season. SFU has started four freshman/sophomores in 12 of its 16 games this season, and the five second-year players have contributed 1968 of 3200 possible minutes (61.5 percent) thus far. Most of the team's production is also coming from the five players. Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) Will Felder (Cleveland, OH/Lutheran East Hs), Chris Johnson (Newport News, Va./Denbigh), Tony?Peters and Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) have scored 653 of 953 points and have pulled down 265 of 522 rebounds, accounting for 68.5 percent of the team's offense and 50.8 percent of its rebounds.
