On The Horizon
Saint Francis will return to an all-too familiar place next week when it hits the road for a two-game road swing through Connecticut. The Red Flash will look for their first road win (0-12) of the year when it visits Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. on Thursday. SFU will then take on Quinnipiac at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
History Lesson
The Saint Francis radio team of Bernie Jubeck and Joe Vesnesky love their history, so we dedicate this note to the voices of the Red Flash. Typically, we reserve this space for information on Saint Francis opponents, but we are taking a break to find out more about our own history here in Loretto. Loretto was founded in 1799 by Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin as the first English-speaking Roman Catholic settlement west of the Allegheny Front. He named it after the town of Loreto, Italy, site of a Catholic place of pilgrimage. Saint Francis College was established in 1847 by six Franciscan Friars from Ireland who were given land in Loretto by Bishop Michael O'Connor to establish a school. The University was one of the first Catholic Universities in the United States and the first Franciscan college in the nation. Although it originally only admitted males, it became one of the first Catholic Universities to become co-educational.
Series vs. Long Island
Long Island defeated the Red Flash 81-67 back on Dec. 4 in Brooklyn, but SFU has a slight 31-30 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 1963-64. Saint Francis earned a 74-73 overtime victory over the Blackbirds last season at DeGol Arena. However, LIU has wins in five of the last six meetings between the schools.
Sizing Up The Blackbirds
Long Island leads the nation with eight road wins, and brings and overall record of 14-4 in Saturday's contest. The first-place Blackbirds are 6-1 in the NEC after an impressive 83-67 at Robert Morris on Thursday night. LIU features a balanced scoring attack that is the best in the Northeast Conference, averaging 82.0 ppg. It's plus-9.9 scoring margin and .469 field goal percentage also lead the league. Jamal Olasewere leads the team with 12.4 ppg, while shooting 50.3 percent from the field. He also averages 6.3 rpg, and is second on the squad with 24 steals and 12 blocks. Kyle Johnson averages 11.2 ppg and 5.7 rpg, C.J. Garner averages 10.9 ppg and 3.4 apg, and Julian Boyd averages 10.9 ppg and a team-best 7.9 rpg.

Ritter Making Impact

His energy has given a boost to the SFU defense, and he has shown an ability to put points on the board. Ritter established a career-high with 11 points in a televised game at Wagner (1/8/11), and tied that career-high with 11 points last Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson. Over the past four games, he is averaging 7.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, and 1.5 spg. He has made 9-of-11 field goal attempts (.818), and is 4-for-5 from outside the arc.
