On Deck!
Saint Francis will put its five game winning streak on the line when it visits preseason Northeast Conference favorite Quinnipiac at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Red Flash are coming off a come-from-behind 88-86 overtime victory at Sacred Heart on Thursday night. It marked SFU's first road victory of the season in 13 attempts, and gave the Red Flash their longest winning streak?(5) since the 1993-94 season. It marks just the third time in program history, and the first time since the 1995-96 season, that SFU has won five straight Northeast Conference contests. Saturday's game features two teams that are locked in a four-way tie for fourth place in the league. The game can be heard on The EDGE?1400 AM (Loretto, Pa.) and The EDGE 850 AM (Johnstown, Pa.), and a link to listen will be available at www.myedgeradio.com.

On The Horizon
Saint Francis will return to DeGol Arena on Thursday night when Central Connecticut State visits for another pivotal Northeast Conference battle. The game will be the 499th Red Flash men's basketball game to be played at DeGol Arena. SFU?will then play host to Bryant when it visits at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.

History Lesson
The Saint Francis radio team of Bernie Jubeck and Joe Vesnesky love their history, so we dedicate this note to the voices of the Red Flash. Quinnipiac University was founded in 1929 by Samuel W. Tator, a business professor and politician. Judge Phillip Troup, a Yale College graduate, and Tator's wife, Irmagarde Tator, a Mount Holyoke College graduate, also played major roles in the fledgling institution's founding and nurturing;the former became its first president until his death in 1939; the latter, its first bursar. Quinnipiac was conceived in reaction to Northeastern University's abandonment of its New Haven, Connecticut program at the onset of the Great Depression. Originally, Quinnipiac was located in New Haven and called Connecticut College of Commerce. From 1943-1945, the college closed; nearly its entire student body was drafted into World War II. Upon re-opening, the college's enrollment nearly quadrupled to approximately 800 students. In 1951, the institution was renamed Quinnipiac College, in honor of the Quinnipiac Indian tribe that once inhabited Greater New Haven.

Series vs. Quinnipiac
SFU won a 73-68 battle in its last meeting with Quinnipiac on Feb. 18, 2010, in what would prove to be a critical win in the team's Northeast Conference playoff berth. However, the Bobcats have won four of the last five contests with the Red Flash to take a 16-7 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1997-98.

Sizing Up The Bobcats
Quinnipiac was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the Northeast Conference by the league's 12 head coaches. The Bobcats won the 2009-10 regular season league title after tying  Robert Morris, but dropped the tournament championship game to the Colonials. Those two squads met in an NEC rematch on Thursday night with Quinnipiac coming away with a 69-61 victory to improve to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the NEC. The Bobcats have lost three of their last four games, but all three losses came without the services of reigning Northeast Conference Player-of-the-Year Justin Rutty, who sat out seven games with an elbow injury. Rutty had surgery, but returned to the lineup on Thursday night. He finished with 6 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Rutter is averaging 15.8 ppg and 9.9 rpg, and is shooting 51.9 percent from the field this season. James Johnson sparked the Quinnipiac offense on Thursday night with a career-high 38 points behind a 12-of-21 night from the floor. He also added 8 rebounds, and is averaging a team-best 17.2 ppg to go with 4.3 rpg and 3.9 apg this season. Deontay Twyman is third on the team with 13.4 ppg as the Bobcats average 73.3 ppg, and allow 70.6 ppg.

Inside The Box Score

One Point Wins
After defeating Bucknell, 68-67, by one point on Nov. 20, 2010, the Red Flash improved to 19-10 all-time in one-point games at DeGol Arena. Saint Francis has a 307-190 record (.618) overall all-time at DeGol Arena, which opened in 1972-73.

Double Digit Wins
The Red Flash won the first four games of this current five-game win streak by double digits, marking the first time they accomplished that in Northeast Conference play. SFU last won four straight games by 10-or-more points during the 1977-78 season when it defeated FDU-Madison, SUNY-Buffalo, Catholic and Point Park. Saint Francis has not won five straight by double digits since the 1968-69 season.

Inside The Winning Streak
During Saint Francis' current five-game winning streak, sophomore Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) is averaging 22.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 2.6 apg. He is 34-of-61 (.557) from the floor, 16-of-32 (.500) from long distance, and 29-of-35 (.829) from the stripe. The Red Flash entered the five-game stretch without reaching 70 points on the season, but have produced the team's five highest scoring outputs (70, 69, 75, 86 and 88). Likewise, Saint Francis has held its opponents to its three lowest scoring outputs on the 2010-11 season (54, 55 and 56). Against LIU, the Red Flash won for the first time this season when an opponent scored 70-plus points. Over its last five games, Saint Francis is 129-of-263 (.490) from the field, 36-of-84 (.429) from outside the arc, and 94-of-120 (.783) from the foul line. Six SFU players are averaging 8.2 ppg or more during the streak. Sophomore point guard Chris Johnson (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) has a 33-to-10 assist-to-turnover ratio during the past five games. Saint Francis last won five straight games during the 1993-94 season. SFU has not won six straight games since the 1990-91 NCAA Tournament season.

Charity Work
The Red Flash led the Northeast Conference in free throw percentage (.732) a year ago with the sixth-best single-season performance in program history. Head coach Don Friday's squad is at it again. Despite struggling through a 14-for-23 effort on Thursday night at Sacred Heart, Saint Francis ranks third in the NEC (and 37th in the nation) with a 73.9 percent success rate at the line this season.
