BOX SCORE
EMMITSBURG, Md. (Oct. 16, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary's 2-0 on Sunday afternoon under sunny skies at Waldron Family Stadium. The victory not only guaranteed a .500-or-better season for the Red Flash for a fourth straight year, but aided it in staying ahead of the pack in Northeast Conference standings.
To date, Saint Francis (9-5-1; 5-0-1) has accumulated 16 points – one ahead of Monmouth, which was a 2-0 winner over Robert Morris earlier in the day.
After a sluggish start,
Alecia McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Donegal ) scored her first career goal in the 30th minute to give SFU the only goal it would need. The sophomore defender headed a
Briana Tata (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) corner from five yards out that struck the inside of the cross bar and deflected downward just to the inside of the goal line.
Less than three minutes into the second half,
Beatriz Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) gave the Flash its second goal, tapping a ball into the goal after it grazed a Mountaineer player.
Red Flash junior goalkeeper
Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) stopped six shots to earn her sixth shutout of the season – tying for fourth most in a season in program history.
The Mount (4-8-2; 2-4-0) was led by Sadie Winship who took three shots, two of which were on goal. MSM keeper Alicia Miller made three saves.
Total shots were relatively even in the match with Saint Francis holding a 15-to-14 edge. Each team finished the day with one corner kick.
Saint Francis returns to action on Friday when it hosts Bryant in a 4 p.m. match.
