READING, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2011) – The Saint Francis University bowling team recorded a 4-1 record as the KU Baker Invitational hosted by Kutztown drew to a close Sunday afternoon.
"This weekend was the definition of team bowling at its highest sense,” head coach
Tom Falbo said. “Every member of this squad has been asked to contribute and sacrifice during a very successful October. I'm so proud of them. Today, the oil pattern played very challenging and only one team scored over 1,000 all day. We won because of our heart and great team approach to the day."
Sunday's tournament action featured a traditional game format with Adelphi coming as the only team to throw over 1,000 against the Red Flash, in the entire weekend's events.
Similar to Saturday's competition, Saint Francis lost its opening match but closed out the day with four consecutive victories. The Red Flash fell to Adelphi by the score of 1,042-840 to start the day but then rolled to victories over Cheyney (920-813), NCAA tournament team from a season ago Kutztown (836-826), Medaille (826-773), and Saint Peters (826-802).
In the match with tournament host Kutztown, the Flash held a slim lead heading into the final frame. The last bowler for SFU, freshman
Lauren Johnson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast), threw a perfect strike in the 10
th frame and followed that up with a spare to secure the win.
Sophomore
Marissa Matassa (Plum, Pa./Plum Senior) bowled the high game of the day with a 232, while Johnson finished with the high average of the day at 177.8.
With the wins this afternoon, the Flash compiled a 9-2 record for the weekend's tournament and start the season at 11-2 overall.
The Red Flash junior varsity squad was also in action this weekend at Kutztown and compiled the highest traditional game pinfall of any of the participating schools. SFU rolled games of 839, 856 and 775. Senior
Emily Knott (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) pulled in the game-high average at 182.7. In it's two quad-baker matches, the Flash fell to Adelphi 576-691 but recorded a win over Kutztown 687-541.
"I'm so proud of how our SFU White team competed this weekend," Falbo said. "They came out ready to go and bowled tremendous games and really showed how much depth we have this year."
Saint Francis is next in action Nov. 4-6 when they travel to Elmwood Park, N.J. and Parkway Lanes for the New Jersey Jambo hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson.
