Saint Francis Welcomes American Saturday for 7 p.m. Tip

SFU looks to win third consecutive at home

LORETTO, Pa. (Dec. 9, 2011) – Saint Francis hosts its final home game of the 2011 calendar year Saturday, when American travels to Loretto for a 7 p.m. tipoff. 
 
FLASH FACTS
- After posting their second worst single game shooting percentage against Lehigh, the Red Flash return to DeGol Arena where they have had an electric field goal percentage. As a team, SFU shoots 56.3-percent from the field at home.
 
- Scott Eatherton (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) leads the way in home field goal percentage going 33-of-37 from the field this season at DeGol Arena.
 
- Rebounding has been a good indicator of Red Flash success this season. The Flash have won the rebounding battle twice this season and both of those games have been SFU victories.
 
- Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) continues to impress off the SFU bench with four consecutive double-digit performances for the Flash as a reserve. The junior averages 12.2 points per game as a reserve, while also pulling down 4.5 rebounds per game off the bench.
 
- Matthew Mazzara made his first appearance for SFU as a member of the basketball team Wednesday. The State College, Pa. native is also a member of the SFU football team.
 
- After starting the season with just one double-digit performance in his first four games, Eatherton has racked up five consecutive double-digit scoring performances.
 
- Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) continues to impress as one of the top freshman guards in the Northeast Conference. The Jersey City, N.J. native has recorded an assist in each game this season while also posting four double-digit scoring performances.
 
- 2011-12 marks the 12th consecutive season American and Saint Francis have met. The Flash and Eagles have split the last two meetings with SFU winning in the 2009-10 season and American claiming victory a season ago. SFU holds an all-time record of 4-9 in the series, which dates back to the 1972-73 season.
 
SFU'S PATRIOT LEAGUE TOUR
The Red Flash have taken a tour around the Patriot League during their non-conference slate. Saint Francis has faced the five teams currently a top the Patriot League standings. American currently sits first in the Patriot League standings with an 8-2 overall mark. (The Patriot League has yet to hold a conference contest.)
 
3-POINT HIGHS AND LOWS
Saint Francis started the season with a hot shooting stroke from behind the 3-point arc, shooting 39.0-percent from 3-point land in its first seven games. Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) led the way posting a 43.8-percent shooting mark from behind the arc. Over the last two games, the Red Flash have struggled from the 3-point arc going just 5-of-26 (19.2-percent). In the past two games, SFU boasts just two players with 3-point baskets. Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) and Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) have combined to go 5-of-16 in the past two games, while the rest of the team holds a 0-of-10 mark.
 
SFU's ERVIN IS MAGIC OFF THE BENCH
Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) embraces his role as a reserve for Saint Francis and since moving to the bench the junior has seen a steady rise in his numbers. In the past week, Ervin has averaged 18 points per-game off the bench and seven rebounds per contest. Since moving out of the starting line up Nov. 23, the junior forward has averaged 12.2 points per-game and posted four double-digit performances. Ervin has also shown a better shot selection as a reserve, shooting 58.8-percent as a bench player compared to 38.9-percent as a starter.
 
BROWN'S BIG DAY
Freshman forward Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) posted a breakout performance against Lehigh with nine points, six rebounds, two steals, three assists and a blocked shot. His rebound, assist and steal numbers all ranked as season high marks for the freshman from Philadelphia. Brown has also seen a steady rise in his field goal percentage with a better shot selection. In his last six games, Brown is shooting 48.4-percent from the field. 
 
PAINT PRESENCE
Despite struggling with rebounding this season, SFU continues to find ways to rack up points in the paint. The Red Flash have scored 45.5-percent of their points this season in the paint and their two-highest totals, against FDU and Monmouth, both resulted in SFU victories. In nine games this season, Saint Francis owns six games with 25-points or more in the paint.
 
GETTING STRONGER WITH THE BENCH
The Saint Francis bench continued to post excellent numbers for the Red Flash this season and through nine games is averaging 21.3 points per game. The SFU bench has been held under 10-points in a game just twice this season and has scored 20-points or more four times. Bench scoring accounts for 34.2-percent of the Red Flash offense this season.
 
UP NEXT
Saint Francis begins a five game road trip following the team's finals week at Big East foe Pittsburgh. The Panthers and the Red Flash will tip off Dec. 20 in the Petersen Events Center at 7 p.m.
