Flash remain atop NEC standings with Senior Day win

LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 26, 2011)Allison Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) tossed in 20 points on Senior Day at DeGol Arena to break out of a late-season slump and help lead Saint Francis to a, 79-69, win over Wagner on Saturday.

"This week (my teammates and coaches) pulled me aside, especially yesterday and today, (and told me to) 'be confident in your shot when you take it'," said Daly who hit the 20-point mark for the third time this season. "That came from my team, my team gave me all the confidence."

Daly and fellow senior Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, Ohio/Miami Trace) (14 points) accounted for half of SFU's double-digit scorers. Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Shené Fleming (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Lilley also tallied a game-high seven boards and eight assists.

The Seahawks (12-16; 5-12 NEC) opened the game on fire, shooting 80 percent (8-for-10) in the opening seven minutes of play. The efficient Wagner effort was mitigated by a 3-for-3 performance by SFU (18-11; 13-4 NEC) from 3-point range – two of which were thrown down by Daly – and eight points by Fleming during the same time period.

"I thought both teams started off the game hot," said Saint Francis head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl. "Shooting the ball well from the outside, getting some layups – we had some good balance there early on. I thought Shené did a great job."

A Fleming layup at the 13-minute mark broke a 17-17 tie that sparked a 7-0 Red Flash run. Wagner would whittle their deficit to two points with 7:03 to play in the half, but Saint Francis ended the half with a 15-4 flourish. Daly scored nine of her 18 first half points during the tear.

A Sarah Thorn (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) 3-pointer 27 seconds before the intermission gave Saint Francis a 14-point lead – its largest of the half. Brittany Lilley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) made a free throw to set the halftime score, 39-24.

"In that last five minutes of the first half our defense was, I think, stifling and really propelled us to that nice cushion as halftime," said Robinson Fruchtl.

The Flash extended their lead to a game-high 17 points 41 seconds into the second half and maintained a double-digit lead until Wagner battled back to make it an eight-point game (67-59) on a Marie-Laurence Archambault jumper with 2:16 remaining in regulation.

Saint Francis scored seven of the game's next 10 points – all from the free throw line – to regain a 12 point lead with under a minute to play.

Lilley converted on eight free throw attempts in the game's final two minutes to finish 11-of-12 from the line. As a team, the Flash connected on 24-of-29 (82.8 percent) free throw attempts on the afternoon – well up from their season average of 63.1 percent.

Wagner's Stephanie McBride scored a game-high 24 points.

The Red Flash can lock up their first Northeast Conference regular season title since 2004-05 with a win against Mount St. Mary's on Monday (7 p.m.) or a Monmouth loss at Quinnipiac. As it is, Saint Francis can finish no lower than second place in the league standings.
