LEWISBURG, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's soccer team shrugged off a two-game skid by downing in-state rival Bucknell, 2-1, at Emmitt Field on Sunday afternoon. The win evened SFU's record at 4-4, while the Bison saw a two-game winning streak ended to fall to 2-4.
After a scoreless first half, junior
Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) was the first to crack the scoreboard with a 47th-minutes goal. The score, which came 2:06 into the second half, saw McKibben volley in a cross from
Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) to notch her fifth marker of the season.
The Red Flash would add an insurance goal in the 74th minute. This time the play built up from the left flank as
Codi Bixler (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) sent
Ellie Gavin (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) forward, and Gavin's cross into the six-yard box was redirected in by a sliding Maros de Carvalho.
Bucknell picked up its only score of the day with 6:35 remaining on a shot to the upper right corner by Cassie Denger.
Saint Francis finished with a 22-16 shot advantage, while Bucknell had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. The Bison's Sandita McDermott logged seven saves, while
Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) had six for the Red Flash.
The Flash returns to action when it welcomes Robert Morris to open Northeast Conference play on Sunday. The match is set to begin at noon at the Stokes Soccerplex.
