The Red Flash End Road Woes Against FDU, 69-63

Eatherton posts fourth double-double

BOX SCORE

HACKENSACK, N.J. (Jan. 21, 2012)
– The Saint Francis men's basketball team picked up their first road win of the season Saturday knocking off Fairleigh Dickinson, 69-63.

The Red Flash (5-14, 4-4) used a strong first half combined with excellent free throw shooting down the stretch to get past the Knights (1-18, 0-8). Scott Eatherton (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) led the way for SFU with 25 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) poured in 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting and added five rebounds. FDU struggled from the field shooting just 39.3-percent (22-of-56), but got a strong effort off the bench from Lonnie Robinson, who had 15. Kameron Ritter posted a solid game with a career-high six assists and just one turnover.

Saint Francis and Fairleigh Dickinson exchanged runs early, but Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) making his second consecutive start provided excellent outside shooting early. The SFU rookie also made a diving steal on the sideline in which he knocked over an entire row of chairs but picked up the theft. The Dallas, Texas native connected on two first half 3-pointers and totaled eight first frame points with two rebounds, an assist and a block. The Red Flash broke the half open late as they closed the first half on an 11-2 run and went into the locker room with a 40-28 advantage. Eatherton led SFU in scoring in the first half with 11, while also racking up five rebounds.

Fairleigh Dickinson came out of the locker room with a lot of intensity to start the half and much better defensive pressure. The Red Flash responded with strong inside play, with Jon Taylor (Bowie, Md./Montgomery College-Germantown) and Eatherton leading the way. The Knight hard work and defense paid off and they trimmed into the SFU lead. Fairleigh Dickinson turned to full court pressure and the press generated turnovers and frustrated the SFU guards. The pressure also generated fouls and the Knight got over the foul limit with over seven minutes remaining. FDU then made the mistake of putting Eatherton on the charity stripe and the sophomore made them pay connecting 6-of-8 from the line in the second half. The Flash went the final 3:47 without a field goal but got their six final points from the free throw line to hold off the Knights.

Saint Francis returns home Jan. 26 to battle conference foe St. Francis (NY) with tipoff set for 7 p.m. at DeGol Arena.
