Flash finish New Year Knockdown in fourth

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2012) – The Saint Francis University bowling team wrapped up the New Year Knockdown in fourth place in the eight-team field.

To begin today's round, the Red Flash (37-20) squared off with Fairleigh Dickinson and New Jersey City to add to its win and loss record from Saturday's traditional game action. FDU and NJCU got the better of the Flash and took both of those matches, giving SFU a 3-4 record to place them fourth in the seeding for the championship bracket round.

Saint Francis defeated Delaware State 763-740 in its first test of the quad baker style bracket round to move onto a rematch with Fairleigh Dickinson. The second-ranked team in the country took the match 761-705 to send them into the championship against host school St. Francis (N.Y.) and the Flash into the third and fourth place match against Maryland Eastern Shore. UMES took home third place by downing SFU 854-808 in their meeting. The Flash were up in the match by 35 pins heading into the final game, but UMES threw a final game of 256 to push them past Saint Francis for the win.

SFU averaged a 187.5 during its five baker matches and compiled a total baker pinfall of 3,750. For the weekend, freshman Lauren Johnson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) led the Flash with a 212.4 average and earned all-tournament honors for her efforts. Johnson also threw the highest game for SFU when she bowled a career-high 257 game in Saturday's first round of action.

Christina Leid (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) led the Red Flash on Sunday with a baker frame average of 20.75. Johnson compiled a baker frame average of 19.44 while sophomore Marissa Matassa (Plum, Pa./Plum Senior)'s 18.85 ranked her third on the team.

Saint Francis returns to the lanes this weekend for the three-day Kutztown Baker Invitational in Reading, Pa.
