Surging Monmouth trips up Red Flash

BOX SCORE

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Jan. 23, 2012) – Monmouth ran its winning streak to eight in a row, as it downed Saint Francis U., 66-45, in a Northeast Conference women's basketball game at the Multipurpose Activity Center on Monday.

The Hawks (11-8; 6-2 NEC) needed less than seven minutes to race out to a, 15-2, advantage thanks to a cocktail of porous defense, turnovers and poor rebounding, particularly on the offensive glass.

“We didn't play good defense from the beginning,” said SFU head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl.  “We gave up a layup on the first play of the game because we didn't communicate and it went from there.”

“It was a lack of effort and hustle.  We had that on Saturday but this was not the same effort tonight.  It starts with our older players and we need to be consistent with that.”

The Red Flash (7-12; 4-4 NEC) were out-rebounded 45-to-37 on the evening, but only eight of those boards came on the offensive glass.  Monmouth, on the other hand, pulled down 18 offensive rebounds.

After going into the locker room down, 32-20, Saint Francis managed to trim its deficit to nine points on a quick 3-point play by Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).  It was all Monmouth after that, with the Hawks building a lead as large as 26 points down the stretch.

Monmouth was bolstered by 11 second half turnovers which it turned into eight points.  SFU committed 22 miscues in the game compared to 10 by the Hawks.

“Twenty-two turnovers are too much in any game,” said Robinson Fruchtl.  “We'd like to have it down around 14 or 15 with our style of play.  Our turnovers early set a precedent and gave Monmouth momentum and a lot of fast break points.”

Hayward was SFU's leading scorer with 11 points.  Abby Martin led Monmouth's three double-digit scorers with 16.

The Red Flash returns to action on Saturday when it hosts LIU Brooklyn at 3 p.m.
