Red Flash downs Terriers to close out homestand

BOX SCORE   |  POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2012)
– Saint Francis University freshman Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) tallied 19 points in her latest lights-out shooting night to help lift the Red Flash past St. Francis College, 60-51, on Monday at DeGol Arena.

Hayward registered her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring output on a 7-for-10 shooting night to bring her shooting percentage to 54 (25-of-46) for the past four games and make a strong case for back-to-back Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week nods.

“Lex was obviously hot tonight and was feeling it from the very beginning,” said Flash head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl.  “We're trying to get her to be good – really good.  And not just a good freshman… she's not a freshman anymore in my mind.  She's played enough minutes that she needs to just be a Red Flash.”

Hayward hit a 3-pointer 35 seconds into the contest to give the Red Flash (9-12; 6-4 NEC) a lead it would not relinquish.  SFU led by double digits for most of the first half and shot 52 percent in the frame en route to a, 36-20, edge at the intermission.

The Flash followed suit in the second half, keeping the Terriers (3-18; 2-8 NEC) at bay while building a game-high 20-point lead, 57-37, with less than six minutes to play.  Robinson Fruchtl emptied her bench, which allowed the Terriers to add some window dressing to the final score.

“I was very pleased with the focus and the effort tonight especially on the defensive end,” said Robinson Fruchtl.  “We had a good weekend.  I just liked how we played, overall.”

SFU shot 44 percent on the evening while holding its Brooklyn counterpart to a 38 percent shooting performance.  The Red Flash also out-rebounded its fourth opponent all season to the tune of 60-to-51.

Sophomore Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) pulled down 11 of those boards and tossed in 13 points to record her seventh double-double of the season.

Jessica Kauffman and Jasmin Robinson each scored 10 points to lead the Terriers.

“We have a big test coming up at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday,” Robinson Fruchtl said.  “It's February in terms of basketball and you have four weekends to play then the playoffs.  If you don't take care of now March will never happen.”

The Flash and Mountaineers tip off at 7 p.m.
