Saint Francis Falls Short on the road to No. 24 Albany

BOX SCORE ALBANY, NY (Oct. 13, 2012) – The Saint Francis University football team fell on the road to nationally ranked Albany, 36-13, at University Field.
 
The Red Flash (3-4, 2-2) started strong going up 13-6 against the No. 24 Great Danes (6-1, 4-0) but could not hold on against the defending NEC Champion. Keion Wade (East Orange, N.J./East Orange) posted a strong day with 106 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while Kelly went 16-of-30 through the air for 115 yards while also picking up 36 rushing yards. Drew Smith racked up three touchdowns for the Great Danes to go along with 75-rushing yards and 51-receiving yards.    
 
Saint Francis used a power run game to put together a strong opening drive going 33-yards on 10 plays to set up a 38-yard field goal for Josh Thiel (Leesburg, Va./Heritage). After stopping the Great Danes on their opening drive, SFU got the ball near mid-field and then used a stretch play to the left side to spring Wade. Wade carried the ball 53-yard for the score to give Saint Francis an early 10-0 lead.
 
Despite the early deficient, Albany stayed with its game plan and continued to pound the football and picked up a score on a nine-play 81-yard drive. Drew Smith capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run on a scamper out of the quarterback position. Saint Francis responded with a with a 10-play 48 yard drive to set up a 44-yard field goal, which gave the Flash a 13-6 advantage.    
 
The Great Danes locked down defensively and did not allow another score. Smith picked up his second score of the game out of the same “wild cat” formation to tie the game at 13. Following a Flash punt with just a little over a minute left in the half, the Great Danes used a 10 play 62 yard drive to set up a 27-yard field goal for Sean Kenny.
 
Albany controlled the second half picking up three touchdowns to seal the win. Jake Meek rushed for a pair of scores including a 38-yard touchdown to dash any hopes of a SFU comeback. Terrace Bourne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) posted a big day for the Red Flash defense racking up 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble and a kick block. Ryan Revtai (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) led the Flash in tackles with eight with Jake DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) posted a strong showing with seven solo stops.  
 
The Red Flash returns to action next week as SFU return home for its homecoming game against Wagner. Kickoff for the Northeast Conference clash is set for noon.
 
GAME NOTES
- The first quarter touchdown for SFU was their first touchdown against the Great Danes at University field since 2002.
 
- The 31 pass attempts by the Flash are the most by SFU this season. Coming into the game SFU had not attempted more than 19 passes in a game.
 
- The Red Flash were out gained in the second half 68-to-227 by the Great Danes.
