Red Flash capture team title at KU Fall Baker Invite

READING, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2012) – A week after winning its first tournament win in program history, the Saint Francis University bowling team followed that up with another tournament victory, this time at the KU Fall Baker Invite.

“We came to play today,” head coach Tom Falbo said. “Our game plan was sound and we worked as a team in our execution and selflessness. I'm proud of this team and now we'll work to improve upon today's performance.”

Sunday's final day of action out on the lanes followed the traditional game format and the Red Flash thrived in that environment going 5-0 on the day, the only team in the field of 12 to not record a loss on Sunday. Combined with Saturday's results, SFU went 10-1 for the tournament. Also on Sunday the Flash rolled the highest total pinfall of any of the teams at 5,106, the only team to eclipse over 5,000 pins.

The rest of the top-five finishing schools all came out of the Northeast Conference as Adelphi finished second, followed by St. Francis (NY), Kutztown and LIU Brooklyn. Saint Francis threw three team games of over 1,000 pins and finished with game scores of 1,087, 1,056, 971, 975 and 1,017.

Saint Francis got very impressive numbers from two of its rookies in Saturday's all-tournament team representative Shelby Derr (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and also from Ashley Howe. Derr and Howe finished 1-2 in the individual field in terms of total pinfall by averaging 235.6 and 222.0 for their five games on Sunday, respectively. Along with the two freshmen other members of the Flash are not to be forgotten as all had strong performances Sunday. Junior co-captain Marissa Matassa (Plum, Pa./Plum Senior) averaged 196.4, reigning NEC Rookie of the Year Christina Leid (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) came out averaging 191.6 and Lauren Johnson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) finished her day with a 182.7 average.

“Such a strong showing for Shelby and Ashley these past two weeks,” Falbo said. “Today they took charge of their games early on and repeated great shots all day.”

Derr had a monster game in SFU's first match of the afternoon, rolling the highest individual score Sunday with a game of 278. She finished the day with all five of her games above 200 and recorded a total pinfall of 1,178.

Saint Francis returns to action in its next tournament, the New Jersey Jambo hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson Nov. 2-4.
