BOX SCORE
NEW BRITAN, Conn. (Oct. 27, 2012) – The Saint Francis University football dropped its third consecutive game Saturday falling on the road to Central Connecticut State, 32-30.
Rob Holloman racked up 207 yards rushing and 80 yards receiving for CCSU and found the end zone three times to lead the Blue Devils (2-6, 2-3) offensively. The Red Flash (3-6, 2-4) held the early lead but could not hold on. SFU ran out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter but the Blue Devils outscored the Flash 32-17 the rest of the way including picking up a blocked point after touchdown that they returned for two.
After holding a 20-15 halftime advantage, the Flash gave up a 45-yard touchdown run to Hollomon in the third quarter and 73-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Julbes in the fourth. Juan Duque picked up a 33-yard fourth quarter field goal to seal the win for the Blue Devils. Saint Francis struggled in the second half to get first downs but posted big rushing numbers. Keion Wade (East Orange, N.J./East Orange) rushed for 129-yards with a pair of scores while John Kelly (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) added 121 rushing yards for the Flash.
The game turned on an interception in the third quarter when Kelly rolled to his right and tried to throw to Valshawn Wallace (Potomac, Md./Potomac), who tipped the pass attempt allowing David Rose to intercept the pass for CCSU. One play later, Hollomon broke through the left side for his 45-yards score ot give CCSU a 22-20 lead.
The Flash got new life early in the fourth quarter when Josh Thiel (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) connected on a, school record, 50-yard field goal to push SFU back in front 23-22. However the SFU defense had a blown assignment on the next CCSU offensive possession allowing Blue Devil quarterback Nick Sangiacomo to connect with Anthony Julbes for a 73-yard pass-and-catch. After stopping the SFU offense on its next possession, CCSU added Duque's field goal to make the score 32-23 with just a little over five and half minutes remaining regulation.
The outlook was growing dark for the Flash late in the fourth but on the first offensive play for SFU after the Duque field goal, Kelly connected with Franklyn Williamson (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) for a 61-yard touchdown. The score made it just a two-point game with 5:16 remaining. SFU need a stop to get the ball back but on a third-and-12, CCSU picked up a defensive holding penalty to give them the first down and allowed the Blue Devils to run out the clock.
The Red Flash have a bye week next Saturday before returning to the road Nov. 10 for SFU's final road game of the season at Monmouth.
