READING, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2012) - The Saint Francis University bowing team concluded the first Northeast Conference meet of the season Sunday afternoon, going 3-1 on the final day.
"I'm proud of this weekend and what we've accomplished so far," head coach
Tom Falbo said. "We bowled very well in our wins and were one or two shots away in some matches that didn't go our way. It was good to get wins against three ranked opponents. We'll continue our hard work to get even better as this season progresses."
For the weekend Saint Francis compiled a 5-4 record that will go towards its conference record for the season and determine whether or not the team qualifies for the NEC tournament in March. Wins against top ranked teams highlighted the weekend for SFU as they took down No. 3 Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 7 Sacred Heart and No. 12 Kutztown.
With the 5-4 conference record, the Flash are in fourth place in the NEC standings with two conference meets remaining. Kutztown leads the pack with a 7-2 mark and FDU and St. Francis (NY) are tied for second with 6-3 records.
In Sunday's final round of NEC #1, the Red Flash took part in four traditional matches. Those matches finished as follows: SFU over Sacred Heart 1,021-966, SFU over Kutztown 1,084-1,062, SFU over LIU Brooklyn 969-978 and Adelphi over SFU 1,026-927.
Christina Leid (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) had a strong Sunday, averaging 235 for the day and 218 for all games bowled over the weekend.
Marissa Matassa (Plum, Pa./Plum Senior) followed up her exciting performance on Saturday when she was just two pins shy of a perfect 300 game, averaging 208 for the day and 213 for the weekend.
Heidi Baumert (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) averaged 207.87 for the weekend,
Shelby Derr (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) averaged 194 for four games,
Sarah Ross (Crescent, Pa./Moon Area) averaged 191 for five games and Ashley Howe averaged 186.5 for nine games.
"Marissa and Heidi picked up where they left off Saturday," Falbo said. "Christina was in her zone all day and never ceases in her work to get better. However, our team is 10-deep and they're a close group. They all work hard and know what it will take to reach our goals. The energy no matter who is on the lanes is amazing from this group and makes a direct impact in a match."
Five starters in traditional format for SFU are all averaging over 200 for the season thus far with two players averaging over 210.
Saint Francis is next in action when they host the third annual Red Flash Invitational at Holiday Bowl in Altoona, Pa. Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
