Youngstown State uses strong second half to defeat Red Flash

BOX SCORE YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Nov. 16, 2012) – A promising first half for the Red Flash gave way to a lopsided second as Youngstown State came away with a, 75-60, win over Saint Francis U at Beeghly Center on Friday.

SFU trailed by five points after an opening period that featured six ties and four lead changes.  In the second half, the Flash quickly cut the lead to three (31-28) but a subsequent 8-0 Penguins run pushed the difference to 11-points by the 15:43 mark forcing head coach Rob Krimmel to burn a timeout.

Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) stopped the bleeding with his first field goal of the evening, but a 4-0 YSU(3-0) run quickly gave the home team a 14-point advantage.

While the Flash was able to draw within nine, the Penguins long-range game caught fire midway through the second half, allowing YSU to take a 19-point lead by the 7:52 mark.

Youngstown's Blake Allen hit five second half 3-pointers on his way to scoring 18 points.  Kendrick Perry scored a team-high 19 points for YSU.  Saint Francis was paced offensively by Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) who scored 19 points, Jackson chipped in 14.

“In the second half we turned the ball over way too many times and gave Youngstown a chance to play in transition and that's where they're really good,” said Krimmel, who watched his team fall to 0-3.  “Give them credit – they did a good job taking us out of a few things but too many of our turnovers were unforced.”

“Coming out of halftime we have to execute better and we will.”

The Red Flash shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field, but was undone by a season-high 19 turnovers.  YSU shot 50.0 percent (26-of-52) and hit on 15 of 16 free throw attempts.  SFU won the battle underneath, 33 to 27.

Krimmel unveiled a new-look lineup in the season's third game, with forward Stephon Mosley (Harlem, N.Y./Seton Hall Prep) becoming the third freshman to make his way into the SFU starting five.  The switch provided immediate results as the Red Flash looked crisp out of the gate, en route to a manageable four-point deficit at the intermission.

Mosley and Whyatt accumulated eight and nine points, respectively, in the opening half with the Flash holding a 17-to-15 edge on the boards and its 38.5 (10-of26) field goal percentage was its highest first half clip of the season.

Youngstown State, which was 8-for-8 from the free throw line, shot 37.5 percent in the first, led by 11 points from Kendrick.
