Late miscues costly in setback at American

BOX SCORE WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dec. 1, 2012) – A pair of Saint Francis U turnovers with under 2:37 to play allowed American to pull away in a tight ballgame to prevail, 61-51, at Bender Arena on Saturday.

Junior Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) led the Flash with 20 points and freshman Stephon Mosley (Harlem, N.Y./Seton Hall Prep) was close behind with a season-high-tying 15 points.  Forward Stephen Lumpkins paced the Eagles' three double-digit scorers with 22 points.

With the win, American (3-4) improved to 3-0 against teams from the Northeast Conference.

“Our guys battled again, we're in games,” said SFU head coach Rob Krimmel.  “With two-and-a-half minutes to go, American made some plays.  Our focus in the second half was much better than when we started the game but it was a tough loss.”

Saint Francis (0-6) led, 49-47, after a Mosley layup at the 5:27 mark and the game was tied (49-49) with less than five minutes to play.  The Eagles iced the victory with a game-ending 12-to-2 run.

Up to the point, it had been a back-and-forth affair featuring 14 lead changes and 11 ties.

On the afternoon, American shot 57% (20-35) from the floor while SFU fired at 39% (18-46) clip.  The Red Flash bench outscored the Eagles' reserves 21-to-3 and SFU held a 14-to-7 advantage in points off of turnovers.

American edged the Flash on the boards, 25-22, aided by Lumpkins' game-high seven.

Saint Francis will remain on the road to take on Lafayette on Tuesday.  Tipoff against the Leopards is slated for 7 p.m.
