POSTGAME
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2012) – The Saint Francis University men's basketball team could not overcome an 11-point halftime deficit Saturday against Robert Morris falling, 70-56, in the Charles L. Sewall Center.
The Red Flash (5-19, 4-7) received a career night from
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and a solid showing from Scott Eathreton but the Colonials (18-8, 9-4) picked up the win with strong backcourt play from Velton Jones and Coron Williams. Brown tallied a career-high 17 points and Eatherton posted his sixth double-double of the season but it was not for SFU. Jones and Williams combined for 31 as RMU picked up its ninth-consecutive win against the Flash.
The Red flash jumped out of the gate scoring the first four points of the game. Brown scored the first six points of the game for the Flash, while the Colonials countered with 3-point shooting from Williams. Despite early success the SFU offense stalled 10 minutes into the first frame and the Colonials took advantage with hot outside shooting and a transition attack to generate easy offensive looks. Brown finished his excellent first half with 11 points and five rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting. Eatherton tallied 10 in the first half after struggling against the Colonials Wednesday, but RMU took a 37-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Brown continued his hot shooting to start the second half scoring the first five points of the half for the Flash and capped the streak with a thunderous dunk. The run also closed the gap between the Flash and the Colonials, however the Colonials countered with pressure defense, allowing them to get out in transition and pick up easy baskets. Eatherton tallied his sixth road double-double of the season early in half with excellent play inside. The strong play for the SFU sophomore help the Red Flash cut the Colonial lead to just five but RMU countered with a six-point run, mostly using transition play, to move the margin back to 11.
Saint Francis refused to go quietly and cut the RMU lead to just eight with under three minutes to play but a few empty possessions cost the Flash as Robert Morris sealed the game at the free throw line late.
The Red Flash returns home Thursday to begin their final home stand of the season and square off with Central Conn. State. Tipoff of the game is set for 7 p.m.
