STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (FEB. 6, 2012) – Despite winning its 11th straight game in Wagner's Spiro Sports Center, rarely has Saint Francis experienced what it did on Monday night – a reasonably comfortable margin of victory.
Behind a 28-point performance from
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle), the Red Flash (11-12; 8-4 NEC) overcame a contentious first half to down the Seahawks, 85-68, and run its win streak to a season-high-tying four games.
“We have never just come into this building and rolled over them,” said SFU head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl. “They always give us a contest and it usually goes down to the wire. They always shoot the ball well against us.”
Wagner (2-21; 1-11 NEC) – which entered the contest with a cumulative shooting percentage of 36 percent – fired at a 48 percent clip in the first half to enter the intermission down by five, 41-36. The Red Flash, on the other hand, shot a mediocre 37 percent but was buoyed by converting on 16 of 23 free throw attempts in the period.
In the second half, Saint Francis' defense tightened and its offense heated up but, once again, it used free throws to pull away from the feisty Seahawks.
The Flash ended up 41 attempts from the foul line – the third-most in the program history – converting on 30 of those. Williams led the charged with a perfect 14-for-14 performance from the line.
“She really wanted this,” said Robinson Fruchtl of the two-time NEC Player of the Week. “You could tell she was fired up at the end of the first half. It really does take someone to spark you, as a teammate, and I think she really did.”
“We were aggressive this whole weekend. We attacked I think we still need to be more detail oriented, clean things up and communicate better.”
Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and
Rebecca Keegan (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) also registered double-digit point totals with 13 and 12, respectively.
Marie-Laurence Archambault paced Wagner's three double-digits scorers with 16.
The Red Flash out-rebounded its second-straight opponent with, pulling down 39 boards to the Seahawks 37. Williams grabbed a team-high seven in addition to corralling five of SFU's 17 steals.
“Overall, this was a good team effort,” said Robinson Fruchtl. “This was a good road trip. We have one more road game, but we're coming home this week to get some good practice time and get ready for the Colonials.”
Saint Francis visits Robert Morris on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
