BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2012) – The Saint Francis U women's soccer team scored a, 3-0, win over Mount St. Mary's at the Stokes Soccerplex on Friday. The successful Northeast Conference opener evened the Red Flash's record at 4-4-1, while the Mountaineers fell to 4-4-0.
Saint Francis – which is unbeaten in its last 14 home conference matches – now welcomes the last team to tie it on its home pitch, LIU Brooklyn. The Blackbirds (2-6-1) come to Loretto on Sunday in a rematch of the last two NEC championship tilts for a 2 p.m. contest.
Per usual,
Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) sparked the Flash offense against the Mountaineers by picking up a pair of assists before firing the game's final goal in the 68th minute. The SFU offensive pressure, however, was not supplied exclusively by the junior forward.
The Flash outshot Mount St. Mary's 24 to 13 on the afternoon but both teams traded chances shot-for-shot in the second half, with SFU holding a 10-to-9 edge. Twelve Saint Francis shots were on goal, while the Mount managed seven shots that required intervention by goalkeeper
Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow).
Butcher picked up her second shutout of the season and came within one save of her season-high.
The Red & White also held a sizeable 7-to-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore
Eloá Nascimento (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Jose Maria Matosinho) opened up the scoring, putting the eventual game-winner on net in the seventh minute. Nascimento controlled a high, arcing set piece pass from McKibben to hit pay dirt for the second time this season.
McKibben served up a long cross to freshman
Hallie Rexer (Mountain Top, Pa./Holy Redeemer) in the 40th minute. The rookie tipped in the pass from three yards out to collect her first collegiate goal.
Junior
Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) picked up the assist on McKibben's second-period goal.
LIU Brooklyn played Robert Morris to a 1-1 draw in Moon Township on Friday.
