SFU drops LIU Brooklyn to open NEC slate

BOX SCORE BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2013) – Freshmen Korrin Hackenberg (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and Abbey Collins (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) couldn't have synchronized their most impactful performances to date any better.

A forward, Hackenberg scored her first collegiate goal 2:12 into Friday's Northeast Conference final rematch between Saint Francis U (5-6-1; 1-0) and LIU Brooklyn.  In net, Collins made that goal standup for her first career shutout in only her second game in a Red Flash uniform.

"I'm proud of our performance tonight," said Flash coach Brenda van Stralen.  "We created many good chances on offense and, defensive, were able to keep the shutout.  It was a solid performance all around."

Senior Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) added an insurance goal – her third of the campaign – in the 84th minute as Saint Francis claimed its NEC opener.  Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) assisted on both goals.

The Red Flash held a slim 13-to-9 advantage in shots but limited LIU (2-8-1; 0-1) to a mere two shots on goal in the contest.  Meanwhile, Saint Francis peppered Blackbird keeper Jessica Sexton with 10 shots on goal – four of which came from McKibben.

SFU returns to action on Sunday when it visits Wagner.
