SFU triumphs over Navy in return to War Memorial

BOX SCORE JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's basketball team rekindled some fond memories and made a few new ones Monday as the Red Flash topped Navy, 60-57, in front of 2,838 fans at the Cambria County War Memorial.

SFU returned to the building it called home during the early 1970s as a part of the City of Johnstown's Veterans Day celebration and put on a show that came down to the final possession as it improved to 1-1 on the young season.

Freshman Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) certainly made a good first impression with the home crow, pouring in a team- and game-high 20 points.  Playing in only his second collegiate game, the 5-11 guard also dished out five assists and grabbed four steals in the win.

Frankie junior Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.  Sophomore Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) chipped in 10 points to round out the SFU double-digit scorers.

Saint Francis and Navy played to 28-all tie at the intermission and neither team led by more than six points in the contest.

"I was proud of the way our guys responded to a slow start in the second half," said second-year head coach Rob Krimmel.  "It was a great team win. We did a good job attacking and driving the basketball. We didn't make some shots that we normally make, but those will start to fall."

A Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) jumper – his first field goal of the evening – broke a 57-57 tie with 56 seconds to play.  Brown, who was fouled while shooting, converted on the ensuing free throw to close out the scoring but the game came down to the final ticks of the game clock.

After creating a Navy turnover, Harmon was called for a potentially game-changing offensive foul near midcourt with 23 seconds to play.

Navy's Tilman Dunbar was able to get off a final shot, but an Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) rebound sealed the victory.

Worth Smith led the Midshipmen with 16 points.  Will Kelly posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

The Red Flash will hit the road on Wednesday as it tips off a four-game road swing with a visit to Dayton.  Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
