Missed opportunities costly in loss at George Mason

BOX SCORE FAIRFAX, Va. (Nov. 19, 2013) – Freshman Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) led the way for the Saint Francis U men's basketball team totaling 16 points, but missed opportunities plagued the Red Flash as it fell to George Mason 58-46 Tuesday night.

Harmon followed up his first Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week award by hitting on 4-of-8 3-point attempts and dishing out three assists.  However, it wasn't enough to undo a lackluster 30 percent (15-of-50) for the Flash.

What's more, the Flash was ice cold from the foul line hitting on just 10 of 26 chances.

"Free throws.  We've gotta make free throws," said SFU coach Rob Krimmel.  "I thought we battled again out there for 40 minutes and we got the looks that we wanted to get, did a good job driving to the hoop, but we've just got to step up when we get to the line."

"The great thing about that is it's something we can control.  We just need to get in the gym and start making those."

Neither team could take a strong lead early as they were tied at 10 at the midway point of the first period. A Patrick Holloway layup game gave George Mason (4-0) a 12-10 lead at 9:10.

Wright hit a 3-pointer and added two free throws to give the Patriots a 16-12 lead at the 5:58 mark. They held a 25-20 advantage at the half and stretched that to 50-37 with 4:43 remaining in the game.

Saint Francis (1-4) did close to within three early in the second half but could never overtake the Patriots.

Sherrod Wright scored 14 points to lead George Mason and Marko Gujanicic contributed 11 points while pulling down eight rebounds for George Mason.

Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) chipped in 10 points for the Frankies on a 4-of-9 showing from the field.  Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) scored seven points and, for the second consecutive game, tied his career high with seven boards.

"As we talk about the formula for a winning program, competing, winning consistently and then dominating is the progression that [SFU men's soccer] Coach [Michael] Casper preaches to his guys," said Krimmel.  "We're trying to do that with our basketball players, but we've got to start taking advantage of the opportunities that are in front of us."

Saint Francis wraps up its four-game road swing with a Saturday trip to bucolic Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate.
