BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Dec. 4, 2013) – Saint Francis held an edge in field goals attempted and made, assists, blocks and rebounds, but it was the few things that the Red Flash didn't do well that allowed Lehigh to escape DeGol Arena with a 57-50 victory Wednesday night.
While the intensity was there for SFU, the Mountain Hawks (4-5) got to the foul line 28 times and converted on 19 or those attempts. Conversely, the Flash continued to struggle at the line, hitting on half of their 14 free throws.
That, coupled with multiple misses from short-range, derailed Saint Francis' bid to snap its current skid.
"Our effort tonight was much better," said Frankies coach
Rob Krimmel. "Like I told the guys in our locker room, every time you pull on that Red Flash jersey you've got to give that effort because you can give yourselves a great chance to win."
"You look back at the games that were close – Dayton, George Mason, tonight – and look at the layups and the free throws," Krimmel continued, "There's the game. When we get those easy shots, you've got to finish that play and that's what we have to challenge ourselves to improve on."
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led the Red Flash with 16 points and 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Brown paced a strong showing on the boards for SFU, which out-rebounded Lehigh 40 to 34.Â
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) chipped in a career-high nine boards.
The Red Flash (1-7) also outscored the Mountain Hawks 26 to 18 in the paint.
Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park), who celebrated a birthday Wednesday, added 10 points.
Tim Kempton scored 18 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds for Lehigh. Four Mountain Hawks scored in double figures.
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) hit a 3-pointer with 2:52 left to bring Saint Francis within 49-48 but Mackey McKnight responded with a jumper for Lehigh. Following a missed 3-pointer from Millaud-Meunier, Corey Schaefer found Kempton for a layup with 1:02 left to open a 54-48 lead and the Mountain Hawks held on down the stretch.
Saint Francis visits Cornell on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
