BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Dec. 8, 2013) – Duquesne University used a 53-point second half to take down the Saint Francis University women's basketball team, 86-66, on Sunday afternoon inside DeGol Arena.
Five different Dukes (7-3) scored in double-figures, including 20 points from Raegan Moore. The Red Flash (2-5) was led by
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle), who posted a 24 point, seven rebound effort in the loss. Williams went to the charity stripe 15 times in the game and knocked down 11.
"We fought hard in the first half, but our energy was not there in the second and because of that we struggled offensively. We need to do a better job of battling through those frustrating times," SFU head coach
Joe Haigh said.
It was the Flash who jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start off the game after an
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) triple. SFU trailed by six, but eventually tied the game at 15. SFU then embarked on a 6-0 run to take a 21-15 lead.
Saint Francis kept pace for the remainder of the half despite the foul differential; SFU had nine team fouls called against them before the Dukes had two. Duquesne held a 33-32 lead at the halftime break.
Duquense went on a lengthy 26-2 run in the second period and led 66-40 with 7:08 to play. Saint Francis went nearly six minutes without a point during the span and that run by the Dukes was the difference in the second half.
SFU outshot Duquesne in the game with a 39.4% clip to the Dukes 37.9%, but the Flash struggled from beyond the arc hitting just 2-of-25.
Bridget Murphy (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) chipped in with 11 points off the bench after a 5-for-10 shooting day. Saint Francis led the battle in the paint 38-18, but
Duquense led the turnover battle after only committing 11 in the contest.
Saint Francis will take an eight-day layoff in between games to accommodate final examinations. The Flash will travel to Florida for a three-game trip, first against the University of Florida on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.
SFU will be away from Loretto until Jan. 11 when it takes on Northeast Conference foe Fairleigh Dickinson.
