Slow Start Dooms Saint Francis at Robert Morris

BOX SCORE MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2013) – The Saint Francis U women's basketball fell to the Robert Morris Colonials, 67-53, at the Charles L. Sewall Center on Monday Evening.

Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) posted her 17th double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Red Flash (13-10, 8-4), but it was not enough as the Colonials (7-16, 6-6) took advantage of a poor shooting night from SFU. Robert Morris got a strong night from Artemis Spanou as the junior posted 18 points and 15 rebounds.

SFU was held without a field goal for six minutes in the first half until Kelley Doogan (Claymont, Del./Ursuline Academy) made a reverse lay-up. The offensive struggles continued for the Flash in the first stanza, shooting 27% and scoring only 20 points before the break, tied for the second least this season.

The offensive woes sustained after the break for SFU as they struggled to get into a rhythm early in the second frame. The Red Flash got a spark from Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) with 7:12 to play as she hit a lay-up with a foul. SFU narrowed the margin to 12 with that play, the closest it had been since the first half.

“Robert Morris did a good job defensively on us,” SFU head coach Joe Haigh said. “We didn't start well in the first half and it was a tough shooting night overall.”

Shene Fleming (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) opened the game with five quick rebounds. The junior scored seven points all coming in the second half and finished with 11 rebounds. Rebecca Keegan (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) registered nine points and three boards in her fifth consecutive start.

Saint Francis posted 19 offensive rebounds in the game, highlighted by five from Williams and three from Fleming.

Saint Francis returns to action Saturday as they travel to Quinnipiac for a noon tip-off. The Bobcats won the first meeting of the season on Jan. 21 at DeGol Arena, 85-69.
