BOX SCORE HAMDEN, Conn. (Feb. 16, 2013) –
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) posted her 18th double-double of the season, but Saint Francis could not keep the Northeast Conference's first place team from making a second half comeback. Quinnipiac won the matinée game, 61-50, to stay undefeated in NEC play on Saturday afternoon.
Williams finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Red Flash (13-11, 8-5), who have dropped two straight games. The Bobcats (21-2, 12-0) were led by Felicia Barron, who led all scorers with 18 points.
“We left too many points on the board early today with missed lay-ups and free throws,” SFU head coach
Joe Haigh said. “We played hard and forced a lot of turnovers, but the tough shooting made it hard for us.”
Saint Francis led at 10:50 in the first half on until a shot clock violation led to a lay-up from Brittany McQuain to give the Bobcats a 33-31 lead with 15:24 to play in half two. Both teams traded leads until Quinnipiac took a nine point lead with under six minutes to play.
The Flash forced 21 turnovers in the contest, the Bobcats highest total in league play. 10 different Saint Francis players recorded points in the game.
Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) added seven points apiece.
SFU held Quinnipac to 24 points, its lowest first-half total since conference play began as the Bobcats only connected on 28 percent of their shots. The NEC's top three-point defense also forced a 0-10 Quinnipiac effort from the beyond the arc in the first frame.
Saint Francis returns to action on Monday as they take on Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
