Mount St. Mary's fends off late Red Flash run

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2013) – Shivaughn Wiggins scored 22 points to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 69-58 victory over Saint Francis U in front of 1,236 at DeGol Arena Saturday night.

Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) led the Red Flash with 15 points, Anthony Ervin (Chesterfield, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) scored 12 and Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) had 10. Saint Francis (2-21, 2-10) will head to Sacred Heart on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest.

Trailing 7-6 5:03 into the game, the Mountaineers ran off 15 consecutive points to lead 21-7 with 6:45 left on two free throws from Wiggins.

“We knew that they were going to be a team coming in that would shoot a lot of jump shots,” head coach Rob Krimmel said. “We were getting stops it was just that second wave that got them to the free throw line and got them close to the basket.”

Mount St. Mary's led 32-18 at the half but had to withstand a strong SFU surge in the second half that cut its lead to single digits. A Brown layup with eight minutes to play made the score 57-48 but the Mountaineers responded with an 8-0 run that put the game out of reach.

“In the second half guys were more confident, guys were shooting shots they were supposed to shoot,” Krimmel said. “You need to play with confidence, you play basketball with confidence and as a staff we need to do a better job instilling that confidence.”

Raven Barber added 12 points and Rashad Whack 11 for the Mountaineers (10-13, 5-7), who have won three of their past four games.

“We need to grow from this and need to get better especially against teams that pressure the basketball,” Krimmel said.

Mount St. Mary's collected 28 points off of turnovers and won the rebounding battle 37-25.
